Griz end season with shutout of Eagles

Freshman Courtney Watson scored her first collegiate goal and sophomore Kristen Hoon posted a shutout in her first collegiate start as Montana wrapped up its season Friday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash. It was the final match of the season for both programs.
The Grizzlies, who went 2-1-1 over their final four matches with three shutouts, finished the season tied for fifth in the Big Sky Conference with seven points at 2-4-1. Montana went 3-12-3 overall.
Eastern Washington (2-14-1) finished seventh in the Big Sky at 2-5-0.
The teams, who would both take 14 shots in the match, were deadlocked through 65 minutes, but Montana broke through in the 66th minute on a well-executed set piece out of the corner.
Freshman Maddey Frey touched a short-corner pass to freshman India Watne. Watne gave the ball back to Frey, whose cross was headed into the corner of the goal by the six-foot Watson at 65:19.
Hoon, who finished with seven saves, made the goal stand up.
Eastern Washington had a corner kick and took four shots ??? two on goal ??? in the final 33 minutes, but the Eagles could not solve the Montana defense.
Montana???s 14 shots matched a season high. Watne took four shots, three on goal, senior Kaitlyn Heinsohn and sophomores Erin Craig and Ashley Tombelaine two each. Both of Craig???s shots were on goal.
The referees, who called 24 fouls between the two teams, issued five second-half yellow cards: two on Montana (Frey and Heinsohn) and three on Eastern Washington.
Northern Arizona (11-3-3), which rolled through league play without a loss at 6-0-1, will host next weekend???s Big Sky Conference tournament in Flagstaff, Ariz.
The tournament???s semifinals will be a repeat of Friday???s matchups for the top four teams.
No. 2 Portland State (9-9-1, 5-2-0 BSC), which beat Sacramento State (7-9-1, 4-3-0 BSC) at home Friday evening, 1-0, will face the No. 3 Hornets again next Friday.
The Lumberjacks, who defeated Northern Colorado (10-5-3, 3-2-2 BSC) at home Friday afternoon, 1-0, will host the No. 4 Bears.
Weber State (3-15-1, 2-4-1 BSC), which shut out Idaho State (6-11-2, 1-5-1 BSC) Friday afternoon at home, 2-0, in the final match of the season for both teams, finished in a tie with Montana for fifth place. The Bengals ended up last.
