New Mexico jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than 22 minutes into the match and rolled to an impressive 7-0 victory over Montana Friday night at Albuquerque, N.M., in the season opener for both teams. The Grizzlies will travel south to Las Cruces, N.M., to face New Mexico State Sunday evening, while the Lobos will remain home and host Nebraska.
The Lobos got their seven goals Friday from seven different players.
Kate Wyrick, Rachel Fields and Zaneta Wyne scored in the opening 22 minutes. New Mexico would go up 4-0 just before the half when Roxie McFarland scored from 30 yards out.
The Lobos grabbed a 6-0 lead just minutes into the second half. Natalie Jenks scored off a cross in the 53rd minute, and just 29 seconds later Jennifer Williams found herself one-v-one against Montana freshman keeper Julianna Jack and scored high.
Jordan Craig scored the match???s final goal in the 88th minute from 30 yards out on a breakaway.
New Mexico out-shot Montana 15-1 and did not allow a Griz shot until freshman India Watne???s attempt in the 85th minute sailed wide.
Jack went the distance in goal for Montana, which started eight underclassmen, including four true freshmen. New Mexico put 10 of its 15 shots on goal. Jack finished with three saves.
???New Mexico is a good team, obviously,??? seventh-year UM coach Neil Sedgwick said. ???They were the more mature team tonight. They finished when they had their chances, though five of their goals came on elementary errors on our part.
???Offensively we were not as effective as I would have liked. We got the ball wide a number of times in good areas, but either we didn???t get the cross or we couldn???t get the shot.
???With a young team, these are the games you learn from most. The girls are eager to learn from the video and move on and have a better performance Sunday.
???This was just the first step on a long journey for a young team.???
New Mexico State played one half of soccer Friday night at home against Texas-El Paso in the Aggies??? season opener, but weather forced the game to be stopped and declared a no contest.
