Montana shut out by UC Davis

The University of Montana soccer team dropped its final non-conference match of the regular season Sunday afternoon, falling to UC Davis 3-0 at Davis, Calif. The Grizzlies will take next weekend off before opening Big Sky Conference play Friday, Oct. 8, at Sacramento State.
The Aggies (5-3-1) needed less than five minutes to score what would be the game-winner. Kiele Argente took a through pass from Lisa Kemp and beat Montana freshman keeper Kendra McMillen into the bottom left corner of the goal at the 4:47 mark for her first goal of the season.
???We expended a great deal of emotional and physical energy (in Friday???s 1-0 loss at Pacific),??? UM coach Neil Sedgwick said. ???That seemed to be something that was tough for us to overcome today.
???We started slow, and conceding an early goal put us in position of chasing the game.???
UC Davis would pepper Montana (1-8-2) with 15 first-half shots, but McMillen made four saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep it 1-0 at the break.
Allison Kelly made it 2-0 in the 55th minute when her shot from 25 yards out deflected in off the crossbar. The goal was Kelly???s fifth of the season.
Argente and Kemp switched roles for the match???s final goal, with Kemp scoring her second goal of the season from close range off Argente???s crossing pass at the 65:00 mark.
UC Davis took another 14 shots in the second half. McMillen finished with five saves and three goals allowed in 90 minutes of work.
The Grizzlies took three shots for the match, all in the second half and all on goal.
Senior Kaitlyn Heinsohn took two of the shots, senior Frankie Brady one. Heinsohn and Brady both played 90 minutes.
???We must be more focused on getting shots off,??? Sedgwick said. ???We are close to their goal, and we develop things well, but the final pass or the final touch is off. Our purpose needs to be getting to goal.
???We played two solid teams this weekend to prepare for Sacramento State. We competed exceptionally well Friday, but over the next two weeks we need a singular purpose of getting to goal and getting behind the opposition.???
