Griz head to Greeley to take on Bears

ON THE ROAD: The 11th/12th-ranked University of Montana Grizzlies (2-2/1-1 Big Sky) are on the road for the third time this season, playing the Northern Colorado Bears (2-2/1-1) Saturday, Oct. 2, in UNC???s Nottingham Field (8,500, grass). Kickoff is at 1:35 p.m. (Mountain Time).
NEXT WEEK: Montana hosts the Idaho State Bengals. UNC is at Montana State.
SELLE LOST FOR THE SEASON: Senior quarterback Andrew Selle will be lost for the season, as he suffered a career-ending injury in UM???s 28-25 win over Sac State. The 6-2, 211-pound senior was a candidate for the Walter Payton Award this season. The Billings native had a record of 14-3 as a starter. He is ranked 10th in school history in career passing yards (4,131) and in total offense (4,217 yards). His 38 career touchdown passes rank him ninth (tied). Selle is a 2010 team captain and started all four games this season for the 11th/12th-ranked Grizzlies. He was 41-of-77-5 passing for 599 yards and five touchdowns this year.
GRIZ LAST WEEK: At Montana 28, Sac State 25: Senior quarterback Justin Roper threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Bryce Carver with 9:34 left in the game, and the defense played a stellar second half, to lead the 14th-ranked Grizzlies to a Big Sky Conference win.
Montana???s defense held Sac State to 70 total yards (24 rushing and 46 passing) and two first downs in the second half. Linebacker Alex Shaw had a team-high 12 tackles and a tackle for loss. He was followed by linebacker Jordan Tripp (10 total tackles); cornerback Brandon Dodson (9 TT) and tackle Bryan Waldhauser (7 TT, 1.5 sacks).
ROPER SOLID: Roper was an efficient 16-of-19 (84.2%) for 189 yards and two scores, and was picked off once.
OFFENSIVE LEADERS: Wide receiver Jabin Sambrano had team-highs of 7 catches for 77 yards. Also in the mix were halfback Chase Reynolds (5-60-1), Carver (3-48-1), and WR Antwon Moutra (2-61-1). Reynolds gained 42 hard-earned yards on 21 carries.
ROPER NAMED POW: Roper, a senior from Buford, Georgia, was selected as the Big Sky ???Player of the Week??? on offense. Waldhauser, a junior from Worden was UM???s defensive nominee, while, and junior kicker/punter Brody McKnight (Vancouver, B.C.) was the Griz nominee on special teams. It is Roper???s first POW award.
REYNOLDS CLOSING IN ON RECORD: Reynolds, a senior from Drummond, scored two touchdowns against Sac State, giving him 52 total TDs in his career, just one behind the record of 53 set by former halfback Lex Hilliard from 2003-07.
OPPONENTS CORNER: Series: Griz lead 15-0
ABOUT THE BEARS: UNC returns 17 starters from a 3-8 team that was 107 in the Big Sky last season. UNC was picked seventh in the league???s preseason media and coaches??? polls.
UNC LAST WEEK at #25 Michigan State 45, UNC 7: The Bears played #25 Michigan State in front of 70,926 Spartan Stadium fans. MSU racked up 532 total yards, while UNC was limited to 266. Bears quarterbacks Dylan Orms and Seth Lobato were picked off four times.
GRIZ TRAVEL PLANS: The team will depart Friday, Oct. 1 around 11:00 a.m, via charter aircraft. Lodging is at Embassy Suites in Loveland, Colo. (970-593-6200). Practice is at 1:30 p.m. at Nottingham Field and is CLOSED. The team will return home via charter aircraft after the game, with ETA 9:30 p.m.
