Former University of Montana defensive end Bobby Alt was one of 58 student-athletes from the Football Championship Subdivision named to the FCS Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team the organization announced Tuesday.
Alt, who transferred to Montana after one season at Mt. SAC Junior College, graduated last month with a degree in sociology. He entered the fall semester with a 3.92 grade point average.
Alt, from Ontario, Calif., had a standout senior season, both athletically and academically. He started all 14 games for a Griz defense that led the Big Sky Conference in both scoring defense (19.9 ppg) and total defense (327.1 ypg).
He tied for eighth on the team with 52 tackles and finished in the top three in both sacks (4.5) and tackles for loss (10.0). His four quarterback hurries led the team.
Alt was named honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference as Montana went 11-3, earned a share of the Big Sky title and advanced to the FCS national semifinals.
He played in 39 games over his three-year career with the Grizzlies and finished with 111 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.
Alt was named a Capital One Academic All-American in December and will be a three-time Academic All-Big Sky Conference selection when the league’s fall academic teams are announced next month.
Only nine of the 58 players on the FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team had GPAs better than Alt’s 3.92.
Eastern Washington’s Mike Jarrett (3.41 GPA), a kicker, and Jeff Minnerly (3.83), a safety, and Montana State’s Elvis Akpla (3.28), a wide receiver, also made the team.
