The University of Montana men's tennis team moved to 3-0 in Big Sky play Saturday with a 5-2 win over Idaho State at Reed Gym in Pocatello, Idaho.
Montana (8-4, 3-0 BSC) defeated the Bengals (7-9, 4-2 BSC) for the second time this season. The first was a 4-3 win in which No. 1 Carl Kuschke and No. 2 Mikolaj Carukwere defeated.
The top two Grizzlies made up for their early season losses. Kuschke defeated Charles Norman 7-5, 6-1, while Caruk defeated Nate Gross 6-4, 6-4.
"Both Miko and Carl were able to turn their matches from earlier this season," coach Kris Nordsaid. "This is a testament to the improvement that has happened this season."
Michael Facey at the No. 4 and Ethan Vaughnat the No. 5 also won their matches in straight sets.
Andrew Warren at the No. 3 lost a three set match which included a tie breaker in the second set. Andreas Luczakalso lost his match in three sets.
The Grizzlies continued their strong doubles play with a sweep of the doubles point.
"I continue to be pleasantly surprised with the strength of the doubles play," Nord said. "When we get a good doubles performance it helps set the tone for the rest of the match."
The Grizzlies continue their road trip tomorrow with a match at Weber State another team in the thick of the conference race.
"This will be the toughest conference match to date," Nord said. "Weber has a tough program and it is tough to play in Ogden."
