Montana men's tennis coach Kris Nord holds high expectations for his squad as UM takes on the region's best this weekend at the UTSA/ITA All-American Championships at the University of New Mexico.
The Griz travelled with six of the team's top players to Albuquerque, N.M. for singles and doubles action in the team's third tournament of the fall, happening Wednesday through Saturday.
While it's only the third tourney of the fall… for Coach Nord, it's a big one.
"It's a really good chance for our guys to go out and play a really high level of tennis, and to have to play it immediately. Every match is going to be a tough one."
"I'm really hoping the guys rise to the challenge and play well because you can't come here and play your B game and win many matches."
UM will square off against 11 of the region's best tennis teams, including strong programs in Denver University, New Mexico, Utah and Boise State, winners of the Dar Walters Classic earlier in the month.
Leading the Griz on the court is Peter Mimnagh-Fleming, who has been playing the most consistently high level singles of the fall season.
Mimnagh-Fleming will enter the doubles rounds paired with another Grizzly hotshot in senior Tomasz Soltyka, who was a key member of the Grizzlies Big Sky Championship of two years ago.
Senior Semion Branzburg is another player that Coach Nord expects to perform well at his last regional tourney, understanding how tough the competition is.
Pairing with Branzburg in the doubles round is sophomore Yannick Schmidl who showed well in the season opener at Bozeman, picking up two singles wins before falling to the tournament's No. 1 player.
Rounding out the Griz contingency in Albuquerque is Spanish sophomore Victor Casadevall and promising freshman Alexander Canellopoulos who will pair up for UM's third doubles team.
"All six, if they play well, have a shot," says Nord. "I'm hoping we play well as a team. They understand that it's go out and play well, or play in the back draw.
"I really wouldn't have brought them here if I didn't feel that way about them. Any one of the six can go and win some matches and go deep into this tournament if they play well."
TEAMS COMPETING:
University of New Mexico (UNM)
Weber State (WU)
Brigham Young University (BYU)
Utah State (US)
Northern Arizona University (NAU)
New Mexico State University (NMSU)
Boise State University (BSU)
Denver University (DU)
Air Force Academy (AFA)
University of Montana (UM)
