Griz topple Thunderbirds

The weather may have been cool Wednesday afternoon in Missoula, but the Grizzlies men's tennis team was anything but in a dominating 7-0 sweep of the visiting Southern Utah Thunderbirds.
The Griz made quick work of the doubles competition, winning all three matches by the identical score of 6-1. The No. 3 team of Zach Fisher and Victor Casadevall finished first, followed by No. 2 Semion Branzburg and Yannick Schmidl and finally the top team of Peter Mimnagh-Fleming and Tomasz Soltyka.
The singles competition was much of the same for Montana, who won the match in a little under an hour and a half.
Mimnagh-Fleming raced through his match at No. 3, winning 6-0, 6-0 to push the overall score to 2-0. He was closely followed by No. 5 Alexandr Rudenco who won 6-1, 6-0.
Schmidl was next with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 6. Branzburg, Tomasz Soltyka and Casadevall all followed suit with easy victories.
Head coach Kris Nord was happy his team played their best tennis and didn't play to the level of the competition.
"I thought our guys played well," he said. "I challenged them to go out there and get a little better. I was really happy with our performance, both singles and doubles. I didn't feel like anybody just kind of coasted through it, everybody worked at it, and that's what we asked them to do."
The match was played on campus at the Robert O. Lindsay Tennis Center. A good crowd was on hand to watch the two teams meet, which Nord said was fun for his team.
Montana will be back in action on March 20 when they host the rival Montana State Bobcats. The Griz have four more home matches in March.
