Rising Montana tennis star Victor Casadevall overcame the 130-mile-per-hour serves of New Mexico's fifth-seeded Bart Van Leijsen to advance to the round of 32 with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-1 win at the ITA Mountain Regional Championship in Las Vegas over the weekend.
Â
Casadevall then went on to battle Utah's 17-seed and eventual semifinalist, Santiago Sierra in the round of 16 before falling in three tough sets 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to produce UM's highest finish in the round of 32.
Â
"Victor had a great tournament," said Montana head coach Kris Nord. "Beating the five seed in the second round was huge. How he did it was also impressive. He overcame some adversity on the court and was behind in the third set. I was really proud of how he competed. He continues to impress me on how good he can be."
Â
Alexander Canellopoulos also picked up a first-round win over the U.S. Air Force Academy's Tadgh Collins 6-0, 6-2 to make the round of 64 before falling to Boise State's Kyle Butters in two sets.
Â
The Grizzlies finished 3-6 in the main bracket of the tournament against the region's best and 5-6 in the consolation bracket. Montana finished 1-2 in the main bracket of the doubles, and 2-3 in the consolation bracket.
Â
"I feel like our guys are competing better match-by-match, which is good. Even in our tough losses, our guys fought better," Nord added.
Â
In doubles, Casadevall and senior Peter Mimnagh-Fleming advanced to the second round with a win over BYU's Pearce/Sullican pair, 8-6, before falling in another close match with the third-seed Little/Shainyan pair from Utah, 8-6.
Â
"Our doubles are getting better, all three teams I took down there fought better. If we take that approach into our dual matches, we'll have a better chance of having a good season."
Â
Montana will conclude the fall season next weekend in Spokane at Gonzaga's Bulldog Classic where the Griz will get an early look against some of the Big Sky's best in a preview of the spring season. The Bulldog Classis is set for Oct. 28-30 at GU's Stevens Tennis Center.
