Griz drop close one at Grand Canyon

The Montana men's tennis team completed its final warm up match before the start off Big Sky Conference play, dropping a close 4-3 decision to host Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
The Griz move to 1-2 on the young season, with the team's first victory coming last week at Montana State. The Antelopes move to 6-4 on the season.
As they did in Bozeman, the Griz jumped out to an important good start in the doubles competition, sweeping the three games to earn the point, putting Montana out to a 1-0 lead heading into the singles competition.
Semion Branzburg picked up a win in the first round of singles action, defeating GCU's Mitch Maroscher in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) to put UM up 2-0.
The 'Lopes then went on to rattle off three straight wins to pull ahead of the Griz 3-2.
Yannick Schmidl tied the match at 3 with a straight-set victory in the fourth round over GCU's Mathieu Ounanian (6-4, 6-2), but Justin Cvitanovic would go on to defeat UM sophomore Victor Casadevall to give the 'Lopes the 4-3 victory.
"Overall I was happy with the way the guys played," said Montana head coach Kris Nord.
"We put ourselves in a position to win, and I'm a little bummed out we didn't get out of there with the win. But like I told them, it's the little things that make the difference at this level. We definitely have some things to take away from this and work on."
Big Sky Conference action officially gets underway for the Grizzlies on Sunday, when UM travels up the Arizona Veterans Highway from Phoenix to Flagstaff to take on the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, who upset the Griz in the opening round of last year's Big Sky tournament.
Action from Flagstaff gets underway at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28.
