The University of Utah set a new mark for the best start to a season in school history, moving to 8-0 by defeating the Montana men's tennis team 7-0 in Salt Lake. It was the Grizzlies' first action of the new year, moving them to 0-1 at the start of the season.

The doubles pairing of Peter Mimnagh-Fleming and Semion Branzburg picked up Montana's only win of the day, defeating Utah's Cowley/Swiggart pairing 4-3 in the opening match of the doubles series.

The Utes then rattled off two straight wins with the Sierra/Weverink pair beating Yannick Schmidl and Alexander Canellopoulos 6-2, and the Jonhagen/Micevski duo knocking off Tomasz Soltyka and Victor Casadevall 6-3 to claim the doubles point.

"We were showing some nerves and rust, and that was to be expected," said Montana head coach Kris Nord. "We had a shot at doing a little better in the dubs and we didn't quite do it there, then they got rolling in singles, and they're a good program."

Branzbug put some pressure on last fall's ITA Mountain Regional finalist Dan Little in the second match before falling 6-4 to give Utah the point.

Soltyka was the only other Grizzly to post wins in four games, but lost the match in the first two sets to Utah's Jamey Swiggart 6-4, 6-4.

"It's a start. It's what we needed," added Coach Nord. "We'd rather have this than a match where we don't really see where we're at. So we have an idea, and now let's go get better before we go to Bozeman."

The Grizzlies will now go back into hibernation for two weeks until Feb. 20 when they travel to Bozeman to take on Montana State in a nonconference matchup against the Cats.
