Two programs earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards
4/14/2016 8:10:00 PM | Women's Cross Country, Golf
The Montana women's cross country and women's golf teams both earned Public Recognition Awards this week as part of the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate program. Programs receive a Public Recognition Award when their APR ranks in the top 10 percent nationally in their sport.
Â
It is the fourth straight year for the cross country team to be honored, the third consecutive year for the golf program. Montana had three teams -- cross country, golf and women's basketball -- earn the award last year, a high-water mark for the department.
Â
APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation.
Â
Montana's programs were two of 17 recognized from the Big Sky Conference. North Dakota had four teams honored, Eastern Washington three, Montana and Northern Colorado two each. Ten of the Big Sky's 12 schools had at least one team honored.
Â
Five of the Big Sky's 17 Public Recognition Awards came from women's golf programs.
Â
Brown earned the highest number of Public Recognition Awards (21), followed by Dartmouth (19), Bucknell (17) and Stanford (17).
Â
One hundred teams from the Ivy League were recognized, the most of any conference, followed by the Patriot League (94), Atlantic Coast Conference (81) and Big Ten Conference (69).
Gonzaga led all schools with the highest percentage of its teams (80 percent) among those at the top of the APR list.
Â
The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years. APRs for all Division I teams will be announced on April 20.
