Three Montana football players have eared a place in the 2016 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society, recognizing college football players from all divisions who maintain a cumulative 3.2 GPA throughout their college careers.
Â
Derek Crittenden adds to his already illustrious resume with a place in the Hampshire Society after being recognized by the NFF as a National Scholar-Athlete, and a finalist for the prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy. Joining him as members of the Hampshire Society is NFL prospect Tyrone Holmes, and former kicker/punter Chris Lider.
Â
Qualifications for membership in the NFF Hampshire Honor Society include
being a starter or a significant contributor in one's last year of eligibility (or a senior who has declared for the NFL Draft); achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study; and meeting all NCAA/NAIA-mandated progress towards degree requirements.
Â
A total of 868 players from 275 schools qualified for membership as the society celebrates its 10th year, setting a new record for the number of players honored during the history of the program.
Â
"The number of colleges and universities who embrace the Hampshire Honor Society continues to increase each year," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell.
Â
"Over the past decade, it has become a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these young men for their commitment to excellence."
Â
Crittenden was a four-year letter winner for the Grizzlies from 2012-2015, earning a starting role his senior year. He is one of Montana's all-time great scholar athletes, maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA with a major in chemistry and minors in Mathematics and Philosophy. He is a two-time CoSIDA Academic all-American, a four-time academic all-Big Sky selection, a finalist for the Campbell trophy, and a finalist for the Rhodes Sholarship, considered the world's highest academic achievement.
Â
In 2015, Holmes led the nation in sacks his senior season with 18, and is now preparing for the NFL Draft where pundits predict him to be drafted as high as the fifth round. Holmes maintained 3.5 GPA in his four years as a Grizzly, majoring in marketing. He earned the nation's highest achievement for a FCS defender, being awarded the STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year, and was selected to four different all-America teams in 2015 as well.
Â
Lider also earns a place in the Hampshire Honor Society, maintaining a 3.55 GPA in Finance while earning three letters with the Grizzles as a punter/kicker. Lider was named to the 2015 academic all-Big Sky team, and received an honorable mention all-Big Sky award as well.
Â
Montana is one of 32 schools that have had at least one student-athlete recognized in each of the Hampshire Honor Society's 10 years. The list includes: Austin Peay State, Baylor, Brown, Bucknell, BYU, Colorado, Columbia, Dayton, Huntingdon (Ala.), Iowa, Johns Hopkins (Md.), Kentucky, Lafayette, Minnesota, Minnesota Duluth, Montana, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Penn State, Purdue, Redlands (Calif.), Saint John's (Minn.), SMU, South Dakota State, Wartburg (Iowa), Washington U. in St. Louis (Mo.), Wayne State (Mich.), West Virginia, Wingate (N.C.), Yale and Youngstown State.
