The Montana track and field teams had a number of strong individual performances but not enough team-wide success Friday as the Grizzlies lost tight duals to Eastern Washington at the Eagles' 44th Pelluer Invitational in Cheney.
Â
The Montana women, behind Sammy Evans' sweep of the long and triple jumps, won seven events but lost their dual 76-72. The UM men had six wins and lost 53-50.
Â
"There were some good performances here and there, but probably not quite what we were hoping for across the board," said coach Brian Schweyen, whose team will stay in the area and compete Saturday at the Community Colleges of Spokane's WAR IX meet.
Â
"People know we're competing tomorrow, so maybe they didn't bring everything they had today, which is completely understandable. Today felt like it was a prelim. Tomorrow will be the final. I'm excited to see what everybody brings. I think we're going to have some great moments."
Â
Evans won the long and triple jumps for the third time in three outdoor meets. She cleared 40 feet in the triple jump for the third time this spring, going 40-7, and led the Grizzlies to a sweep of the top three places in the long jump.
Â
Evans went 18-8, Erika McLeod was just behind at 18-7.75, and Nicole Stroot went 18-5.25 to clear 18-5 for the second straight meet.
Â
Stroot and McLeod picked up their own wins in the hurdles. Stroot won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.75, leading Montana to a 1-2-3 finish, with Morgan Sulser also going under 15 seconds at 14.95 to finish second. Lakyn Connors was third.
Â
McLeod, who had an eight-foot PR in the javelin, won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:02.41. Olivia Ellis was second in a season-best time of 1:04.66.
Â
Emily Cheroske won the 400 meters in a time of 59.08, Kayla Holmes, who had an 18-inch PR in the shot put to finish second at 44-1.25, won the discus at 146-10, and Lindsey Dahl had the top throw in the javelin of 147-1, her third time in three meets in the mid-140s.
Â
In one of the day's spotlight events, Eastern Washington's Kaytlyn Coleman out-threw Montana's Hana Feilzer in the hammer. Coleman set a meet and school record, going 200-1. Feilzer, who eight days ago had a PR of 175-7, broke 190 feet for the second straight meet, landing at 191-4.
Â
Dylan Reynolds was a two-event winner for the Montana men. He took three-hundredths of a second off his Big Sky-leading time to win the 400-meter hurdles in 53.88. He also added 14 inches to his PR in the long jump, going 22-6.5.
Â
Sterling Reneau won the 400 meters, running out in front to win by more than a second in a time of 47.92, his second straight week going sub-48 seconds. In the 100 meters, Alex Mustard ran a time of 10.83 to finish second behind Big Sky leader Jeremy VanAssche.
Â
Jensen Lillquist didn't win the javelin, but he threw 216-0 on his first attempt of the day, which was doubly good. He added nearly eight feet to his PR, and he passed on his final five throws, which will allow him to compete again on Saturday, a rare back-to-back opportunity for a javelin thrower.
Â
Lee Hardt won the high jump at 6-7.5, Charlie Bush won the pole vault at 15-3, and Nick Jackson won the hammer throw at 165-8.
Â
Nate Deming, who finished third in the javelin, was Montana's only new Big Sky Conference qualifier on Friday with a throw of 189-3.
