Tickets for the 2016 Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame banquet, which is at the DoubleTree on Friday, Oct., 7, are now on sale. Tickets are $40 and available for purchase at the Adams Center Box office from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and at griztix.com. Tickets will not be available the night of the function.
Â
The event begins with a social hour from 6:30-7:00 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:00 p.m., and then concludes with the induction ceremony.
Â
The "Class of 2016" is comprised of three former University of Montana athletic standouts. That trio are football players Rocky Klever and Larry Miller, and Lady Griz basketball player Greta (Koss) Buehler. Miller, who died in a car accident in 1974, is receiving his award posthumously.
Â
In addition to the banquet, the newest inductees will be recognized at mid-field at Washington-Grizzly Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 8, prior to the Grizzlies' home football game against Mississippi Valley State.
Â
A 6-3, 215-pound running back/quarterback from Anchorage, Alaska, Klever played from 1977-81. He was the Grizzlies' all-time leader in career rushing yards with 2,228, a record he held from 1981 to 2000, until it was surpassed by Yohance Humphery (4,070 yards, 1998-2001). He is currently ranked fifth in school history in career rushing yards.Â
Â
Klever is the only player in school history to receive the Terry Dillon Award (outstanding back/receiver) three times (1978, 1979, 1981). His senior season he rushed for a team-high 783 yards for the 7-3 Grizzlies, and was named the Steve Carlson Award (MVP) winner. He was the recipient of UM's Grizzly Cup award in 1982, which is given annually to UM's outstanding male student-athlete.
Â
A 6-2 forward, Buehler, who is from Malta, Montana, played for the Lady Griz from 1993-97. During her career her teams had a combined overall record of 100-21; won four Big Sky Conference titles; and advanced to four NCAA tournaments. Â
Â
Buehler was a Kodak All-Region 7 pick and honorable mention All-American as a junior and senior. She was named team MVP, and co-recipient of the Outstanding Defensive Player award as a junior. She was a two-time first team All-Big Sky selection, and tabbed league MVP as a junior. She is currently ranked fifth in school history with 846 career rebounds and is tied for 19th in career scoring with 1,157 points. Her 289 rebounds as a senior in 1996-97 are the second most ever in a season.
Â
Also an outstanding student, Buehler was chosen the Big Sky's Scholar Athlete of the Year, and the NCAA Woman of the Year for the state of Montana as a senior (1996-97). She was an All-Big Sky academic selection four seasons in a row.Â
Â
Miller, from Martinez, Calf., was a star in both football and wrestling at Montana in 1969 and 1970. He was a stalwart at defensive tackle for head coach Jack Swarthout (GSHF inductee in November of 1995) on the Grizzlies' 10-1 football teams of 1969 and 1970, which advanced to the Camellia Bowl (the college division national championship). His 1969 and 1970 football squads were inducted into the GSHF in 2009.
Â
Miller was named a two-time All-American by the Associated Press, earning that recognition in 1969 and in 1970. He was a first team All-Big Sky pick both of his seasons as well. He was a two-time, undefeated league champion in wrestling at the heavyweight division. In 1976, Montana established the Larry Miller Award, presented annually to the Grizzlies' Outstanding Defensive Lineman.Â
