A historic run by Victor Casadevall was the highlight of an overall strong performance by the Montana men's tennis team at the ITA Mountain Regional Tournament in Provo, Utah, over the weekend.
The Grizzlies started the tournament going 3-0 on day one of the doubles competition and logged some impressive wins in the singles competition on top of Casadevall's quarterfinal appearance.
While Casadevall was the one to enter the UM record books, Interim head coach Jason Brown says his entire squad played some of its best tennis during the fall season's biggest tournament, against some of the top players in the Western United States.
"I think Victor's run was a taste of what could have been," said Brown. "But I couldn't be more pumped for the fact we had zero bad losses. The overall level has been raised across the board."
In the 128-player singles field, Casadevall became the first Grizzly ever to advance to the final eight.
In the quarterfinal match, the senior picked up a win in the first set and forced a tiebreaker in the second before falling to the tournament's No. 2 seed David Micevski from Utah 6-2, 6-7 (7-3), 2-6.
"Victor was on the verge of greatness, and there's no reason to be anything but proud of what he did. He had composure, a great mentality, and fought for every point," said Brown.
"His opponent showed why he's playing number one for a Pac-12 school. I mean, he didn't miss. Victor played great, but he was up against a really good player who played really well."
Sophomore Ludvig Hallgren also made a deep run into the singles draw, upsetting the No. 18 seed from BYU, John Pearce, (the son of the Cougar's head coach Brad Pearce) in the first round (7-6, 6-4). He followed that win up with another win over Idaho State's William Edin (6-4, 6-2).
Hallgren was upended in the round of 32 by the eventual tournament champion, BYU's Sean Hill (6-3, 6-1).
In the consolation singles bracket, Alexander Canellopoulos rebounded from a day one loss to advance to the quarterfinal defeating the player who won the regional tournament last year, the No. 14 seed Santiago Sierra from Utah 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.
"I thought that was a good win, probably Alex's best win ever in college," said Brown.
Montana will cap off one of the most successful fall tournament seasons in program history at Gonzaga's Bulldog Classic in Spokane this coming weekend, Oct. 27-29, looking to "establish some regional dominance," said Brown, before heading into the Big Sky Conference season in February.
