The Montana men's tennis team got its spring season off on the right foot, picking up a pair of wins over Lewis-Clark State in a Saturday doubleheader at the PEAK Racquet Club in Missoula.
The Grizzlies ran through the day without dropping a match to the Warriors, winning the first outing 7-0, and following it up with another 7-0 win in the second leg of the doubleheader.
The pair of matches was the first opportunity for the Griz to shake the rust off from winter break. With Big Sky Conference play getting started next week, Grizzly head coach Kris Nord came away pleased with his team's performance.
"I liked what I saw overall. We had a bit of a slow start at one dubs (in the first match), but I like the fight with them coming back and winning that set. From there on it was real solid. I really like how our guys are competing," said Nord.
"We just wanted to come out of this first match healthy with some competitive sets against a new face, and we got that today, so I'm happy."
Montana started the morning off winning the doubles point with UM's dynamic duo of Yannick Schmidl and Alexander Canellopoulos pushing past L-C State's Woldetsadik/Su duo 7-5 on the No. 1 court in match one.
On the No. 2 doubles court, the senior/freshman pair of Peter Mimnagh-Fleming and Max Korkh cruised to a 6-3 win. Korkh was one of Montana's plentiful bright spots, using his powerful serve to get out in front of points.
In match one's singles play, Montana eased to two-set wins on each court, save for the No. 1 court where L-C State's Yonas Woldetsadik made Schmidl fight off several match points in a come-from-behind win in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9.
"I had big trouble finishing points, which is usually my strength. When that happens it's tough for me because that's my game and I had to switch it up," said Schmidl.
"It doesn't matter in the end how you played or what the score was. I got the win. It was a tight match, but I'm just happy to get the win and happy to help the team."
Montana carried over the momentum into the second match of the day which got under way around 2:30 p.m., facing little difficulty in the 7-0 win.
UM again won the doubles point with the Mimnagh-Fleming/Korkh pair winning on court No. 1 6-2, and the Schmidl/Canellopoulos and Hallgren/Tejerina pairings both picking up 6-1 wins on courts No. 2 and 3.
Mimnagh-Fleming took the reins on court No. 1 in the single competition, picking up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Woldetsadik, L-C State's strongest player.
Korkh moved up to the third court from the fifth court in the second match and didn't skip a beat, pulling off a 6-0, 6-2 win over the Warrior's Roberto Salazar.
The Grizzlies return to action next week, opening league play on the road at Northern Colorado and North Dakota.
