A week after winning her first collegiate tournament at the Battle at Old Works, Montana's Baylee Barckley is trying to make it two consecutive victories.
Â
The junior shot rounds of 77 and 76 on Monday on a menacing course and sits in third place, three shots out of first, after two rounds of the Loyola Invitational at the Flossmoor Country Club in Flossmoor, Ill.
Â
"It's not a real long course, but there are a lot of elevated greens, so it plays longer than the actual yardage. But the main factor is the greens," said coach Kris Nord, whose team shots rounds of 316 and 321, and is in third place.
Â
"The greens were very difficult. Large, very sloped and very, very fast. If you lost a little confidence, it made for a long day for a lot of kids. I watched a lot of people four-putt today."
Â
Barckley, at 9-over, sits behind only IUPUI's Aneta Abrahamova and Loyola's Elayna Bowser on the leaderboard. Abrahamova is 6-over after shooting rounds of 76 and 74. Bowser, who carded rounds of 72 and 79, is 7-over.
Â
"Baylee struck the ball real well today," said Nord. "She put the ball on the green. If you weren't on the green, it was hard to get up and down because the ball ran forever.
Â
"There were some places, where if you didn't know not to be there, it was impossible to get the ball up and down."
Â
Barckley was the only Montana player to card two rounds in the 70s on Monday. Kari Opatz (80-78) is tied for ninth, Hailey Hoagland (79-85) is tied for 29th, Teigan Avery (80-86) is tied for 38th, and Faith D'Ortenzio (88-82) is tied for 48th.
Â
Loyola (307-315), which shot the only sub-310 round of the day on Monday, leads the 11-team tournament by eight strokes over Butler (313-317) and 15 strokes over Montana.
Â
IUPUI (318-320) and Creighton (321-319) will both enter Tuesday's final round within three shots of the Grizzlies.
Â
"I think the girls know they can play better. It's really just getting the speed of the greens down more than anything else," said Nord.
Â
"We hung in there today. We didn't score well, but we hung in there. I think the girls know if we play well tomorrow, we have a shot at this thing, and that was our goal."
