Grizzlies win seven events in Bozeman

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana completed its first full meet of the season on Friday evening, with several individuals posting top performances at the MSU Invitational in Bozeman. The Grizzlies had previously sent athletes to Cheney, Wash., and twice to Bozeman, but all three of those were condensed meets.
Montana posted seven event victories, with Carly Smiedala winning the 400 meters, Madeline Hamilton and Jacob Lamb winning the women's and men's 800 meters, Chase Armstrong taking first in the 60-meter hurdles, Jane Booth and Jansen Ziola winning the high jump, Madison Neufeld winning the triple jump, and Kayla Holmes placing first in the weight throw.
Also of note, Montana showed its versatility, with 23 different athletes posting team bests among the 24 events. Montana was going head to head against athletes from Carroll, Montana State and MSU-Billings.

In the 400 meters, Smiedala shaved 1.47 seconds off of her seed time to win the event (56.30). In the 800 meters, Hamilton crushed the 800 meters despite having the worst seed time among the competitors, improving her career best by more than 24 seconds (2:22.59).
The women had plenty of success in the field events, earning several top finishes. Holmes (56-8) and Mariah Harvey (49-7) went 1-2 in the weight throw, with Harvey also placing third in the shot put (40-0.5). Holmes bested her career mark in the event by more than four feet, the equivalent of nearly nine percent, and won the event by more than seven feet. In the high jump, Booth and Ziola both reached 5-2.25 feet to win the event. In addition to a lifetime best in the high jump, Ziola also placed fourth in the long jump, with a team-best 17-6.75 feet.
Carrie Jacka earned a second-place finish in the pole vault (12-0), while Montana had three of the top four finishers in the triple jump. Neufeld won the event (37-1.75), followed by Carla Nicosia (36-5.75, second) and Arielle Walden (36-1.25, fourth).
On the men's side, the 800 meters and 60-meter hurdles were Montana's top events.
Lamb won the 800 meters with a lifetime best 1:58.14, while teammate Noah Adams finished just behind him (1:59.35). Armstrong won the 60-meter hurdles (8.52).
Montana also had top performances in the high jump (Matt Quist, 6-8.75, second); pole vault (Charlie Bush, 15-1, third), long jump (Jordan Stow, 21-6.25, third) and weight throw (Deszmon Humphries, career-best 54-8, third).
Humphries was also Montana's top performer in the shot put (47-2.25, fifth). Jacob Price was the Grizzlies' top performer in the triple jump (39-7), Sterling Reneau placed fourth in the 60 meters (6.99), Colton Hess placed sixth in the 200 meters (23.77), Ty Rather was fourth in the 400 meters (career-best 52.76), and Micah Drew placed fifth in the 5000 meters (16:06.73).
A trio of Grizzlies placed in the top six in the women's 60-meter hurdles, led by Hannah Coburn (9.15, third). Alanna Vann had a strong night, finishing second in the 60 meters (7.81) and fourth in the 200 meters (26.15). In the 5000 meters, Jessica Bailey (18:39.09) and Samantha Engebretsen (18:39.41) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Grizzlies will be back in Bozeman next Friday for the Montana State Duals, going up against the Bobcats and Utah State.
