SEATTLE, Wash. – Montana began the UW Invitational on Friday afternoon, competing against some of the world's top athletes. The Grizzlies held their own on one of the top stages, setting multiple lifetime bests.
Sophomore Jonathan Eastwood, who entered the day holding the top 5,000 meters time in the Big Sky Conference this season, was again at the top of his game. He shaved a full 2 seconds off of the previous top time, running a 14:38.80. Against a competitive field, Eastwood placed 17th out of 54 athletes. Teammates Micah Drew (15:10.98; 40th) and Dillon May (15:35.01; 51st) also ran, with both setting lifetime bests as well.
In the men's pole vault, senior Charlie Bush reached 15-2.25, good for second place out of seven athletes and the top mark by a Montana athlete this season. On the women's side, sophomore Chloe Seferos hit a lifetime-best 11-10.75, which was among the top quarter (seventh out of 27 athletes).
The Grizzlies also had athletes represented in women's 5,000 meters, men's 200 meters, women's weight throw and heptathlon.
Kayla Holmes and Mariah Harvey were near the upper half of the weight throw, placing 22nd and 26th, respectively. Holmes reached 52-2 on her second throw; Harvey recorded a lifetime-best 50-8.25 on her final throw.
One of the primary focuses of the day were the first events of the men's heptathlon. The Grizzlies have two athletes competing in the event, Jordan Stow and Grant Whitcutt. Both had standout performances in specific events, with Whitcutt placing second out of 18 athletes in the high jump (6-2.75). He also finished 10th in the long jump (20-7) and shot put (36-10.5). Stow placed fourth in the long jump (21-6.25) and sixth in the 60 meters (7.27). His long jump mark came after fouling on his first two attempts.
While both athletes were among the leaders in several events, they were also hurt by one event each. Whitcutt placed 18th in the 60 meters while Stow did not reach a height in the high jump. The final three events of the heptathlon will take place on Saturday.
In the women's 5,000 meters, Jessica Bailey (17:37.26) and Samantha Engebretsen (personal-best 17:47.56) finished 32nd and 34th, respectively, out of 58 athletes. Rhett Streeter (23.50; 38th out of 50) and Courtlynd Brown (23.59; 39th) placed back-to-back in the 200 meters. Competing in the pentathlon unattached, Erika McLeod had the second-best mark in the high jump (5-5) and fourth-best in the shot put (36-5), but did not score because she was unable to finish the 800 meters.
The majority of Montana's 34 athletes will compete on Saturday, with many track and field events, in addition to the conclusion of the heptathlon, taking place. For a complete schedule of events click here. To follow live results, click here.
