Grizzlies continue to impress at Dar Walters Classic

With three titles in the previous two tournaments, Montana's young men's tennis squad was looking to keep the momentum up heading into the always-difficult Dar Walters Classic at Boise State over the weekend.

With a nine-man team built of six freshmen facing off against some of the best teams in the region, the Grizzlies once again impressed, with a championship appearance and two quarterfinal runs in singles, and a semifinal run in doubles.

"It was a bigger tournament and better level of tennis across the board," said head coach Jason Brown. "But again, I feel really happy. I think we competed well, traveled well – it was our third week in a row on the road – and I think they responded pretty well. We had some real bright spots."

Junior Ludvig Hallgren was once again perhaps the brightest bright spot for the Griz, riding a 10-match win streak into the championship match of the Blue bracket.

Following a tournament title at Weber State last weekend, Hallgren picked up wins over players from Whitman, Weber State, Boise State, and Gonzaga before falling to the No. 1 seed from Gonzaga in the final.

"That's a really impressive, hard thing to do," Brown added. "He had really tough matches and found a way to pull them out, which is what you want to see in the fall. It's about testing yourself in competition, and he passed all the tests. I think he should be really proud."

Also working his way deep into the "Dar Walters" singles bracket was UM's other star junior Max Korkh, who picked up wins over players from Utah State, and Denver before falling in the quarterfinal to Gonzaga's Sam Feit.

UM's other quarterfinalist in the singles was freshman Oisin Shaffrey, who already picked up a title at the Eastern Washington Fall Classic in mid-September. In the Blue bracket, Shaffrey earned wins over players from Portland State and Boise State before falling to Gonzaga's Simon Homedes, who would later be defeated by Hallgren on his way to the championship.

The two quarterfinalists also paired on the doubles court where they advanced to the semifinal with wins over teams from Weber State and Boise State.

"They played really well throughout," said Brown. "Max was showing a lot of leadership on the court and did some big things."

UM's only other upperclassmen – senior Alex Canellopoulos – didn't fare as well in Boise as in previous seasons. Battling injury, Canellopoulos bowed out early in the consolation rounds of the Dar Walters bracket, but Brown thinks his best tennis is still ahead of him.

"We're waiting for a healthy Alex Canellopoulos to step up," said Brown. We're looking for big things from him. His tennis is really close, and I think if he's healthy he's going to shine as our senior leader."

The Grizzlies now return home for two weeks of training before capping the fall season at Gonzaga's Bulldog Classic in Spokane from Oct. 26-28.

With three of four tournaments in the fall season behind him, Brown says he likes the progress his young Grizzlies have made as he looks toward the spring where he will need to put his best-six players out every week.

"I'm really excited. We've been a little uneven in spots, but the upside has been really good. The top level has been very impressive," said Brown. "We've had some ups and downs but looking at the work ethic and potential; I'm super excited about these guys in the spring."
