BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana Grizzlies closed the indoor regular season on Friday, competing in the Big Sky Tuner. The meet is a lead-in to next week's conference championship in Flagstaff, Ariz.
"Like we have been every week, we're improving," head coach Brian Schweyen said. "I thought there were some strong performances and it was a good final meet before the championships."
On the men's side, Montana had three individual winners, in addition to three runner-up finishes. Chase Armstrong won the 60-meter hurdles (8.47) while Charlie Bush won the men's pole vault (15-1.5). Courtlynd Brown (7.12) and Rhett Streeter (7.15) went 1-2 in the 60 meters, while Brent Yeakey and Deszmon Humphries finished runner up in the shot put and weight throw, respectively.
Yeakey placed second out of 14 athletes, throwing 54-0, a personal best by more than a foot. Humphries' mark of 58-10.75 was his second-best throw of the season.
"Yeakey was really throwing well today," Schweyen said. "He had a personal best and was right where we need him to be."
For the women, the highlights came in the field, with Montana winning three of the six events. Abby Dodge won the high jump (5-2.25), Mariah Harvey won the shot put (42-6.25) and Arielle Walden won the triple jump (38-0.75).
In addition to her performance in the shot put, Harvey also placed second in the weight throw (48-2).
"It was nice to see Mariah get over 42 (in the shot put)," Schweyen said. "I thought she had a great day."
The triple jump was particularly impressive for the Grizzlies, as Madison Neufeld (37-8) and Carla Nicosia (36-11.75) followed Walden, giving the team a 1-2-3 finish.
Additional highlights:
The meet was a mix between athletes competing one last time – hoping to gain confidence and momentum heading into next week's championships – while others used the week as rest leading into the biggest meet of the indoor season.
"It's going to be a great experience for everyone going," Schweyen said. "For a lot of them, it will be their first time, and so I'm really excited for them and everyone. Hopefully we can be at our best."
