OGDEN, Utah – Montana's Zena Smith has been named the Big Sky Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week. It is the sophomore's first career honor, and the second by a Montana javelin thrower this spring.
Smith threw a career-best distance of 156-6 during Friday's Tom Gage Classic, moving into first place in the conference.
The sophomore from Corvallis, Mont., had been the conference leader for much of the season before Montana State's Carley Vonheeder surpassed her two weeks ago. Smith got revenge a week later, improving on her PR by nearly 10 feet and besting the Bobcat with a mark of 156-8.
Smith, who has won the javelin in four meets and has finished in the top three in all six this spring, will be the favorite to win an individual title at this week's Big Sky Championships in Moscow.
