The Montana women's golf team shot a 317 on Monday and is sitting in third place out of four teams after the opening round of the two-day Challenge at Coeur d'Alene Resort.
Host Eastern Washington, with five players in the top nine overall, shot a 296. Montana State carded a 309. Idaho State, which played the opening round at 322, is in fourth place.
"It was kind of scratchy golf today," said coach Kris Nord. "It was great weather and perfect scoring conditions. We just didn't shoot the scores I think we can shoot."
Freshman Brooklyn Van Bebber shot a 77, but she's competing this week as an individual, meaning her score isn't eligible to count toward the team total. She is tied for 10th.
Freshman Allison Sobol, who played the front nine at even par, shot a 78. She is tied for 12th.
"I like how those two are hitting the ball," said Nord. "Even when they're not feeling it, they're playing decent golf."
Freshman Kylie Esh, Montana's low scorer at last week's Battle at Old Works, matched Sobol with a 78. Junior Teigan Avery came in with a 79.
Everyone else carded a score in the 80s, including senior Baylee Barckley (82) and sophomore Faith D'Ortenzio (84), who are in Montana's five-player lineup.
"We just need to get to the range early tomorrow and find some swings that feel better than they did today, because we're just not hitting the ball well," said Nord. "Hopefully that improves tomorrow and we can shoot a little lower."
Eastern Washington's Alexa Clark, who won the Battle at Old Works, is in position to make it two tournament titles in two weeks after shooting a 71 on Monday. Montana State's Kelly Hooper, who shot a 73, is in second.
