Feilzer breaks own school record in weight throw

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Hana Feilzer has accomplished plenty during her collegiate career, scoring at conference five times and winning the hammer throw at the 2017 outdoor championships. She's qualified for regionals in the event twice and owns a pair of school records, in the hammer throw and weight throw, not to mention earning academic honors each semester.
Friday she accomplished yet another feat, smashing her previous record in the weight throw and establishing a new mark. Through five throws, she already had reached a distance that would have won the event, but that didn't stop her from pressing forward. The Missoula native threw a mark of 64-10, beating her previous school record – set in 2017 as a junior – by more than 18 inches. A year ago, that mark would have ranked in the top 50 in the entire country.
After winning 12 of 25 individual events last weekend at the MSU Open, wins were a little harder to come by this Friday in Bozeman. Going up against athletes from Montana State, Idaho State and Utah State, Montana recorded five event wins.
While the total was lower, Montana, perhaps, showed its depth, in terms of where the wins came from.
In the women's 800 meters, sophomore Madeline Hamilton posted her second career victory, running a time of 2:16.06. The time was nearly 30 seconds better than where she was at just over a year ago. The Missoula native went on to progress throughout her freshman season, placing sixth at the Big Sky Championships.
The other surprise came from the relay teams. Montana's 4x400 teams placed last (women) and second to last (men) at last year's Championships, and won a meet just once during last year's indoor season. Both were productive on Friday, though, taking first place.
Competing for the men was a novice group that included two freshmen – Cade Johnstone and Paul Johnstone – and a sophomore – Colton Hess. The veteran of the group was Callum Macnab, who in his two seasons has won a 4x400 conference championship (2017) and finished runner-up (2016). The team's time of 3:23.46 would have ranked second last year.
On the women's side, Montana won with a time of 3:49.84 – a full 5 seconds better than any time from a year ago. The team was led by veterans Carly Smiedala, Jansen Ziola, Olivia Ellis and Erika McLeod.
In addition to her position on the relay team, Ellis had a solid day all around, placing second in both the 60 meters (7.77) and 200 meters (25.92). Macnab placed second in the 200 meters (22.70). Cade Johnstone was second in the 400 meters (50.53) and fourth in the 200 meters (22.77). Paul Johnstone was third in the 200 meters (22.76) and fifth in the 400 meters (50.82).
Montana's other event winner was senior Matt Quist. His height of 6-10.75 was four inches better than second place. As a junior in 2018, Quist won three indoor events and scored at the Championships.
Montana will be back in action next weekend, sending a smaller group to the Husky Invite in Seattle.
