The Department of Athletics at the University of Montana has started the WE ARE mentorship program, which will match interested student-athletes with schools in Missoula.
Â
The WE ARE program -- short for Working with: Engaging and Assisting, Relationships and Empowerment -- will provide an opportunity for student-athletes to be active and positive role models to the youth of Missoula.
Â
"With (Athletic Director Kent Haslam's) leadership, our department prioritizes being active participants in our community and volunteers thousands of hours every year," said Brynn Molloy, associate AD for marketing and community relations.
Â
"Over the past few years we've been testing different ways to empower our student-athletes to engage with the youth in Missoula. We are excited to officially launch the WE ARE mentorship program and feel fortunate we have a platform to increase the impact and difference we can make in Missoula."
Â
Student-athletes who opt to become mentors will make either a semester or yearlong commitment to the program and then make two visits per month to their assigned school, where they will be matched with an individual student, a group of students or a classroom.
Â
The program is open to all schools within Missoula city limits. The matching of student-athletes to opportunities will be equitable based on the number of student-athlete volunteers and the number of school requests.
Â
"We have thoroughly enjoyed participating in the development of the mentorship program with the Griz volleyball team," said Barb Droessler, principal at Target Range School.
Â
"Our students have been given the opportunity to build positive relationships with student-athletes who model the importance of not only academics, but also the importance of giving back to the community. We look forward to a continued partnership with UM Athletics."
