Track & field season gets underway Friday in Bozeman
12/5/2019 12:44:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The bulk of the indoor track & field season doesn't begin until January, but once again Montana will get a head start. And now, the Grizzlies will get to begin a day earlier than expected.
Â
The team will open the indoor season at the Bobcat Preview in Bozeman. The meet, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, got moved to Friday due to MSU's home football game on Saturday.
Â
For the first time in more than a decade, Montana will not be sending athletes to the Candy Cane meet in Cheney, Wash. In the past, the majority of Grizzlies went to Cheney while a select few traveled to Bozeman, based on which events were being offered at each location. This year, with the Bobcat Preview offering a more comprehensive meet, everyone will be in the same place.
Â
"It'll be nice for us all to be together in the same place," veteran coach Brian Schweyen said. "I want to keep our team together as much as possible, and this Bozeman meet will now afford us to do so."
Â
Regardless of where, early-season meets have become a staple under Schweyen.
Â
While in some ways it seems counterproductive to compete and then disperse for winter break and have a month away from formal training, Schweyen sees the early competition as a valuable learning opportunity.
Â
For the 17 newcomers who will make their collegiate debuts this weekend, it gives them a chance to compete early on, and then use the winter break – away from the team – knowing what he or she must work on. The same can be said for the returners, allowing athletes an early barometer of where they're at and what they must do before the season really hits its stride with weekly meets through January and February.
Â
"Typically we have some really solid performances from an early meet like this," Schweyen said. "That's great, but the reminder has to be that wherever you are on Friday, you have to be there, if not higher, in January. We can't take time getting back to where we were.
Â
"I anticipate some good performances this weekend, but the real measuring stick will be Jan. 17."
Â
Following break, Montana will reconvene in Bozeman for the Montana State Multis (Jan. 6-7) before the entire team competes at the Stacey Dragila Invite in Pocatello, Idaho (Jan. 17).
Â
The team will become very familiar with Bozeman and Pocatello over the next several months, with the Grizzlies traveling to Montana State five times and to Idaho State twice – the second being the Big Sky Indoor Championships (Feb. 27-29). Montana will also once again compete in the prestigious UW Invitational in Seattle.
Â
The Bobcat Preview begins Friday at 4 p.m. with the men's weight throw and women's long jump. The rest of the field events will follow, while running events will begin with the women's mile at 5 p.m. A complete schedule can be found online. The meet will feature competitors from Montana State, MSU Billings, Carroll College and Montana Western. Live results will be available during the meet.
Â
A season ago, Montana's women finished sixth at the Big Sky Indoor Championships – and very realistically could have had a top-three finish if not for several final-day flukes – while the men placed ninth. Overall, the Grizzlies scored in 15 events at last year's indoor championships, with athletes returning in 12 of them.
Â
"We have a great core of really talented athletes back from last year, and I think we're mixing in a really good group of young athletes that can really do some damage this year," Schweyen said. "We're really excited about the youth of this team, as well as some of our incredible juniors and seniors. It's a great, well-rounded team that I think has a really bright future."
