Ellis begins senior season with strong meet
12/7/2019 1:12:00 AM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Friday's season-opening track meet was less about where the team finished and more about how the team can build off of the initial performances and springboard the Grizzlies into January and beyond.
Even so, Montana had several encouraging showings for such an early-season meet. The Grizzlies were competing against athletes from host Montana State, in addition to Carroll and Montana Western.
On the women's side, Montana won nine of the 12 events it had an athlete compete in.
Senior Olivia Ellis had a meet to remember, winning the 200 meters (26.04) and 60-meter hurdles (8.89), plus being the lead runner on Montana's winning 4x400-meter relay team (4:03.17). Ellis also finished second, and top among all Grizzlies, in the 60 meters (7.77).
In addition to Ellis, senior Mariah Harvey was also a double winner, coming out victorious in the shot put (44-8.25) and weight throw (53-9). Both marks were career bests.
One of 17 athletes making their collegiate debuts on Friday was Ailsa Gilbert, who was the Grizzlies' top performer in the long jump (17-4.25, second) and placed third in the 60-meter hurdles (9.38). In that event, Montana went 1-4, with newcomer Holly Sudol placing second (9.36). Fellow freshman Carly Dahms placed third in the 800 meters (2:20.97) while Cree Bell was fourth in the 200 meters (26.67) and Molly McCormick was fourth in the 400 meters (1:02.85). All three were also part of Montana's B relay team that took second.
On the men's side, Montana won five events.
One of the highlights came in the 200 meters, where Montana earned four of the top-five and seven of the top-nine times. Montana's top three runners were all part of the school-record relay team last spring, led by sophomore Paul Johnstone (22.40).
Shawn Humphries won the weight throw (career-best 61-9.5), throwing 10 feet further than the next-closest competitor, in addition to placing fourth in the shot put (52-1).
Like Montana's women, the men had several bright spots among those making debuts.
Zane Johnson was Montana's top performer in the triple jump, finishing second (43-5.75), in addition to a fourth-place showing in the pole vault. Fellow freshman Lawrence Moore was Montana's top pole vaulter (14-8.75), placing second – while Quincy Fast was also the Grizzlies' top runner in the mile, finishing second overall (4:27.63). Freshman Peterson Bohannon won the long jump (23-6.25), followed closely by fellow rookies Jethro Thorne (third, 22-7.75) and Jason Upton (sixth, 21-6.75).
Montana's other event winners include: Kahsiah Benson (women's pole vault, 11-5.75); Jane Booth (women's high jump, 5-6); Jaydon Green (men's 60-meter hurdles, 8.23); Jacob Lamb (men's 800 meters, 1:56.84); and Mijah McLeod (women's 800 meters, 2:20.72).
The Grizzlies will now have a full month before their next meet. Select athletes will compete at the Montana State Multis, Jan. 6-7, before the full team returns for the Stacey Dragila Invite, Jan. 17 in Pocatello, Idaho.
