Griz golfers struggle on return to grass

The Montana women's golf team opened the two-day, two-round Lady Thunderbird Invitational with a score of 325 on Thursday as the tournament opened at the Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah.

The Grizzlies are tied for 11th out of 14 teams but will have an opportunity to move up the standings on Friday. Only six of the 14 teams competing broke 310 on Thursday.

"I'm a little disappointed. Even with the long layoff, we can play better than we did today," said coach Kris Nord. "We just didn't play very well across the board. We're hoping to play a lot better tomorrow and climb up the standings."

Montana had just one golfer shoot in the 70s. Baylee Barckley carded a 7-over 79 and is tied for 39th.

Brooklyn Van Bebber came in with an 80, Kylie Esh an 81, Allison Sobol an 85 and Teigan Avery an 87.

"We had too many double and triple bogeys. In general, from 50 yards and in we weren't very sharp," added Nord. "We need to get out and play a little more and not give strokes away around the green."

Cal Baptist (292), Xavier (295), Southern Utah (297) and Oral Roberts (298) all broke 300 for the opening round.

Oral Roberts' Sarah Bell leads the 84-player field at 2-under after carding a 70. Southern Utah's Chanikan Yongyuan and Cal Baptist's Samantha Martirez both shot 71.
