More accolades for Olson
7/16/2019 4:33:00 PM | Football
Montana's preseason Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year Dante Olson has added two more accolades to his resume in the days following the league's football kickoff event in Spokane. One for his work on the field, and one for his work in the community.
Earlier this week, Allstate and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) named Olson to its list of nominees for the 2019 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, an annual award given to college football players for the impact they make off the field.
The senior linebacker was also named to the College Football America Yearbook's 2019 FCS Preseason Starting Lineup, the CFAY's version of a preseason All-America team, the publication announced this week.
###
Olson is one of 137 student-athletes with inspiring stories of community service who were nominated by their respective institutions for the 2019 AFCA Good Works Team, and one of just two players from the Big Sky Conference to be nominated.
He was selected for his dedication to community involvement, including his promotion and involvement in Montana's Be the Match marrow drive and his continued mentorship of a class of underprivileged kids in Northern California, encouraging them to pursue a college education.
Established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team continues to be one of the most coveted community service awards in college football.
From the 137 nominees, the final roster of 23 award recipients will be announced in September, bringing together 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision; 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA); and one honorary head coach.
To be considered for a spot on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.
"To be named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is no small feat and goes above and beyond sportsmanship and leadership in the classroom or on the field," said Tim Tebow, two-time national champion, Heisman Trophy winner and 2009 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team member.
"These student-athletes believe in the power of giving back and enriching the lives of others, while also helping to shape the lives of future young athletes. Each year, I am struck by the caliber of these nominees and humbled to be a part of telling their stories."
The final 22-member team and honorary coach is selected by a voting panel consisting of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members and prominent media members who look for both their dedication to giving back and the embodiment of true leadership on and off the football field.
After the final team members are announced on September 12, 2019, fans can vote for this year's Allstate AFCA Good Works Team captain through the official page on ESPN.com.

Olson is also one of only three Big Sky players to be named to the CFAY FCS Preseason Starting Lineup.
Olson was named to the list with UC Davis' Jake Maier (the Big Sky Preseason Offensive MVP) and Idaho offensive lineman Noah Johnson.
Seven 2018 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) First-Team All-Americans are on the CFA Starting Lineup. They include Duquesne RB AJ Hines, Colgate DL Nick Wheeler, Dante Olson, Jacksonville State DB Marlon Bridges, Dartmouth DB Isiah Swann, Florida A&M P Chris Faddoul and Towson's Shane Simpson, selected as an all-purpose player.
The 2019 College Football America Yearbook features more than 930 college football teams from the United States and Canada in more than 250 striking, full-color pages. That includes every team from the NCAA (FBS, FCS, Division II and Division III), NAIA, NJCAA, CCCAA and U Sports (Canada).
The College Football America Yearbook also placed Montana at No. 23 in its annual Preseason FCS Top-30 rankings, alongside five other 2019 Grizzly opponents.
