POCATELLO, Idaho – Montana's track & field team traveled to Idaho State on Friday for the Stacy Dragila Open. While concerned that there may be some rust following a month-long layoff for winter break, head coach Brian Schweyen was generally pleased with the results from his athletes.
Competing against competitors from Carroll College, Idaho State, Montana State, Montana Western, Weber State and Westminster (Utah), the Grizzlies had eight event wins, and were particularly impressive on the men's side.
Leading the way was sophomore Paul Johnstone. The Forsyth native burst onto the scene last May while being part of Montana's record 4x400 relay team, and picked up where he left off with the victories on Friday. Johnstone won the 200 meters (21.96) and 400 meters (48.60) and was the second leg of a winning relay team (3:23.44), along with fellow underclassmen Peterson Bohannon, Cade Johnstone and Xavier Melice.
"Paul is super hard working and is a great individual," Schweyen said. "He's talented and had a great day. He's one you love having on your team for several years to come."
Montana's men also took care of business in the field, winning three of five events it competed in, while placing second in another. Sophomore Aidan Diggs beat out 19 other jumpers in the long jump, leaping 23-10.75, a career best by more than a foot. Point-scorers at the Big Sky Championship a season ago, Brent Yeakey and Shawn Humphries remained among the best in their events, as well. Yeakey won the shot put with a top throw of 54-8. Humphries had the best mark in the weight throw, at 59-2. Humphries was also second in the shot put (52-2.75), as Montana went 1-2-3 with Noah Ramirez placing third (51-8.5).
In addition to his win in the long jump, Diggs was third in the 60 meters (6.99) and cleared 14-3.25 in the pole vault, a personal best and good for a third-place finish. Teammate Lawrence Moore, a Montana State transfer, placed second in the event (14-3.25).
Montana went 1-2-3 in the 200 meters, led by Paul Johnstone and followed closely by Callum Macnab (22.20, second) and Kip Krebsbach (22.68, third). Macnab also had the third-best time in the 400 meters (49.94) while Krebsbach advanced to the finals of the 60 meters (7.02, fifth). Jacob Lamb had the second-best time in the 800 meters (1:54.68). Following Diggs in the long jump was Jordan Stow (23-2.5, third) and Bohannon (22-9, fourth). Andrea Baratte placed third in the 1 mile (4:20.23) and fifth in the 3,000 meters (9:09.13). Hunter May was in the top six for both distance events, while Will Dauenhauer placed second in the 3,000 meters (8:58.84).

On the women's side, Montana had two event wins, in addition to several other strong performances. For the second meet in a row, seniors Jane Booth (high jump) and Olivia Ellis (60 meters) won their respective events. Booth cleared 5-5.75 in the high jump while Ellis ran a 7.76 in the 60 meters finals, shaving off five-hundredths of a second from her prelims time, which also led the competitors.
Montana athletes took second or third in several additional events, including Ellis placing second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.07). Senior Mariah Harvey, who was victorious in both of her throwing events last month at the Bobcat Preview, once again had a strong meet with a near-PR in the shot put (44-5.5, second out of 19 throwers) and a distance of 51-1.5 in the weight throw (third).
Montana's distance runners were consistently near the front, with four runners in the top half of the women's 1 mile, led by June Eastwood (5:04.01, second). Freshman Beatrix Frissell placed second in the 3,000 meters (10:21.75), setting a PR, and fourth in the 1 mile; Eastwood was third in the 3,000 meters.
"I thought B ran a great 3K," Schweyen said of Frissell, who was making her collegiate debut. She ran a smart race.
"We had some good middle distance and distance races on both sides. Clint (May) is doing a great job with that group and he knows exactly what he's doing."
Freshman Aly Tekippe placed fourth in the pole vault, clearing 11-9.75, which was impressively more than a foot and a half better than she reached during her collegiate debut last month (10-2).
Sophomore Emma Normand set PRs in both of her events. She placed fourth in the 200 meters (26.12) while qualifying for the finals of the 60 meters, moving from fifth in the prelims to fourth in the finals (7.84).
Friday marked the first of six meets over the next seven weeks, culminating with the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. Next weekend, the Grizzlies will be in Bozeman for the MSU Dual Invitational #1.
"It was a good, solid meet, and it was nice to get one under our belt and get ready for the rest of the season," Schweyen said. "We had some minor injuries and bumps along the way, but some people are really coming along."
