Â
The regular season is drawing to a close for the Montana track & field program with just one competition day standing between the Grizzlies and the Big Sky Conference Championships.
Â
A small squad will travel to Bozeman this Friday to compete in the Tom Gage Classic. There will be 13 men and 15 women competing in the meet as a large portion of the roster rests for next week's championship.
Â
"We have some athletes that will be wrapping up their season in Bozeman and in a couple of cases some athletes will be wrapping up their careers," head coach Doug Fraley said. "This is a great opportunity for one last competition."
Â
The meet will begin with the women's pole vault at 1:30 with field events a rolling start. The first race will begin at 2:30 p.m. with the final race starting at 4:45.
Â
While the squad will be smaller for Montana on Friday, there are still several athletes with plenty on the line in Bozeman. Fraley's squad will have several of the top pole vaulters in the conference in action.
Â
Shealyne McGee will jump on the women's side fresh off a personal best mark last week in Pocatello. McGee's jump of 13-4.25 has her ranked second in the Big Sky and 43rd in the NCAA West.
Â
She will likely need to go one or two bars higher to finish the season inside the top 48 and guarantee a place in the NCAA First Round Meet.
Â
Similarly on the men's side, Carson Hegele will compete in Bozeman despite ranking fourth in the conference. Hegele is currently in 60th place in the West, but could get himself a regional bar in Bozeman.
Â
There are some athletes with regional marks on their minds, and there are others that are competing for a spot on the bus to Portland for the Big Sky Championships. The roster is nearly solidified, but Fraley is using the final week as a chance for a few to earn their place.
Â
"We have a handful of people that are competing for the last couple of roster spots," Fraley said. "This meet has tremendous meaning for those athletes."
Â
The Grizzlies, who were picked third in both the men's and women's Coaches' Poll this year after finishing there indoors, head to the Big Sky Championships next week. The league meet will be hosted by Portland State at Mt. Hood Community College from May 13-16.
