Grizzlies back in action Friday in Bozeman
1/23/2020 11:28:00 AM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
From Pocatello last weekend to Bozeman this weekend, the Montana track & field team is on the move once again. The Grizzlies will compete against Montana State and Idaho State in a dual meet, hosted by the Bobcats on Friday.
Â
On the surface, the meet looks very similar to last week's at Idaho State: same format, same events, same teams, for the most part.
Â
That's the thing with a sport like track & field, however. Consistency is good, because it gets an athlete ready for the conference championship meet in late February. The competition matters less in track & field than it does in other sports, as each athlete is more focused on what he or she is doing to improve that what's going on around them.
Â
It doesn't hurt to get a barometer against fellow Big Sky competition, however.
Â
Montana had some success last weekend, in its first meet of the new year. The Grizzlies posted eight event wins, including three by sophomore sprinter Paul Johnstone. The Grizzlies had several additional top-three finishes, including Aidan Diggs, who beat 19 other jumpers in the long jump, leaping a career-best 23-10.75. He also placed third in both the 60 meters (6.99) and pole vault (PR 14-3.25), and was named the Big Sky Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week.
Â
While the format of Friday's meet will look similar to last weekend's, the Grizzlies will be switching several things up and trying out athletes in a handful of new events.
Â
Ben Cikutovich (3,000 meters); Zane Johnson (pole vault, triple jump); Ellis McKean (3,000 meters); Angel Moreno (60 meters, 200 meters); Chandler Nill (1 mile, 3,000 meters); KC Robinson IV (200 meters, 400 meters); Jethro Thorne (200 meters); and Benjamin White (200 meters, 60-meter hurdles) are among many male athletes who didn't compete last weekend, but will be on Friday.
Â
For others, such as Andrea Baratte and Will Dauenhauer, the distance runners will shift from the 1 mile to 800 meters. Montana's men will also have two participants in the triple jump (Johnson and Jacob Price), after having zero last week.
Â
On the women's side, several sophomore athletes will compete after not doing so the previous week, including Hayle Sundquist (60 meters, 200 meters), in addition to Erica Simison (1 mile, 3,000 meters), Rachel Torrey (3,000 meters) and Hannah Wylie (1 mile, 3,000 meters) making their season debuts.
Â
Action begins Friday at 4 p.m. with the men's weight throw, women's high jump and women's long jump. Track events begin at 5 p.m. with the women's mile. Fans can watch the meet on Pluto TV (ch. 538) or follow along to live results.
