Montana drops final game of Lopes Up Classic

The Montana softball team dropped its final game of the Lopes Up Classic in Phoenix on Sunday morning, falling to Saint Joseph's 4-2.

The Grizzlies went 3-2 over the weekend and conclude their early-season tournament schedule with a record of 12-12, three more wins than any other team in program history at this point of the season.

Montana fell behind early, tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, then gave up a three-run seventh to the Hawks.

The Grizzlies scored once in the bottom of the seventh and had two runners on base when the game's final out was made.

Michaela Hood got the start for Montana. She struck out five while dropping to 3-6 on the season.

Saint Joseph's opened the scoring in the top of the second, on a double and an RBI single.

Montana had just two hits entering the sixth off Hawks starter Amanda Herr before the Grizzlies pieced together the tying run.

Maygen McGrath and Morgan Johnson had two-out singles in the bottom of the sixth. Pinch hitter Ashley Ward made it 1-1 on an infield error. The inning ended with runners on second and third.

Saint Joseph's scored three runs on two hits and two walks in the top of the seventh to take the lead for good.

Kylie Becker made it 4-2 with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, driving in Brooklyn Weisgram, who led off the inning with a walk.

The Hawks walked Cami Sellers on four pitches, putting the tying run on base, but Montana couldn't take advantage. The game ended on a fielder's-choice ground out.
