Each Wednesday throughout the summer, Montana volleyball student-athletes and coaches will tell their volleyball stories. Read, in their own words, what the sport means to them and where their passion and drive comes from.
My Volleyball Story:Â Sarina Moreno
Growing up my dad was a wrestling coach, so as surprising as it may be, my athletic career began with me wrestling, while also doing gymnastics. I have always loved the feeling of competing, but it wasn't until I was about 10 years old when my neighborhood friend asked me if I wanted to try out for volleyball with her.
Â
I didn't know much about the sport, but I thought it would be fun to try. I remember going to my first MVA (Montana Volleyball Academy) camp, and I knew this was something that I wanted to keep doing. I still remember going with my mom to buy my knee-high socks, colorful spandex, and huge turtle-shell knee pads.Â
Â
Fast forward to high school when I played both club and school volleyball. Things were much more competitive, which I loved, and we traveled all over to play. We would travel to Spokane, Washington, almost every weekend.
Â
High school was really fun for me because my best friend, Elsa (Godwin), and I were on the same club team and played for the same high school, as well. I've known Elsa since I was in fifth grade. We started volleyball together when we were 10 and now all the years later, we are both going to finish our volleyball careers together at the University of Montana. That will be a memory I'll for sure remember.
Another special moment volleyball has brought to me was my first collegiate game. I will never forget the nerves that shocked my body when I first stepped on the Dahlberg Arena court. I remember feeling so nervous but so excited – nervous for various reasons, but the main one being this was a whole new level of volleyball for me, much different from high school and club. I remember thinking to myself, 'Calm down and play how you know how to play'. Looking back on that memory, I have grown so much as a player. That is a memory I will always be grateful for and will never forget.
Â
I am now transitioning into my junior year of volleyball! It's crazy to think about. People told me that college and volleyball would fly by, but I never thought it would go this fast. Playing volleyball at the collegiate level has taught me so many new lessons and has brought so many wonderful and different people into my life. No matter how hard it gets, I will always love competing, practicing and working hard for the goals I've set for myself.
Â
Volleyball has been a passion of mine since I was introduced to it at the age of 10. I only have two years left to play, and I'm more than excited to see what the future holds.
