Griz track & field returns with full schedule

In 2020, the outdoor track & field season unexpectedly came to a halt just weeks before it was supposed to begin. In 2021, due to regulations for indoor venues, Montana was unable to hold an indoor season.

Finally, in 2022, the Grizzlies are on track to compete in two, complete seasons.

Head coach Clint May and his staff announced Montana's indoor schedule on Friday, which will feature eight meets across seven weekends.

"Last year, without an indoor season, you naturally are challenged to keep a practice intensity and an eye towards things that need improvement in competition," head coach Clint May said. "By the time we finally put on the Griz uniform, we had been practicing for four months. We did fine, but to have an indoor schedule is a huge boost, both physically and psychologically."

Not only has May already noticed a difference in his team's training, but he's also excited for the indoor season because of what the competition looks like.

The Grizzlies will compete in a traditional early-season meet, this year the Bobcat Preview in Bozeman, Montana, on Dec. 3. Then, after winter break, they'll be back in action six consecutive weekends throughout Idaho, Montana and Washington.

"Not only are we back, but we truly have a great series of meets that should serve as an incredible foundation for the later outdoor season," May said.

In mid-January, Montana's multi-event athletes will head to the Snake River Open in Pocatello, Idaho (Jan. 14-15), while the rest of its competitors will be in Spokane, Washington, for a meet at The Podium, a brand-new, track & field-only complex (Jan. 14).

"Our indoor schedule has us competing in one of the finest venues in the country," May said. "The Podium is a state-of-the-art facility that will bring schools from all over the U.S. to Spokane, Washington. To be 3 hours away is a huge blessing."

Over the next four weeks, the Grizzlies will be in Bozeman (Bobcat Performance Meet on Jan. 21), Moscow, Idaho (hosted by Idaho on Jan. 29), Spokane (WSU Open/Invite on Feb. 4) and again Bozeman (Big Sky Preview on Feb. 11).

Montana's three trips to Bozeman will be beneficial, as the 2022 Big Sky Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held there, as well (Feb. 24-26).
