Griz add 12 prep stars to open Early Signing Period

Montana head football coach Bobby Hauck and his staff loaded the Grizzly roster with homegrown talent Wednesday, adding 12 prep athletes – 10 from the Treasure State – on the first day of the fall early signing period.
Following a second-straight run to the FCS Quarterfinal, the Grizzlies' filled needs across the board with players from three states in eight different position groups for the incoming class of 2022.
The first round of recruits in the cohort includes three state champions, with Missoula's Joe Weida scoring a pair of touchdowns in Sentinel's second-straight Class AA title game win and Hamilton's Tyson Rostad leading the Broncs to a Class A state championship.
Eli Gillman was also dominant at running back for his state champion Dassel-Cokato squad in Minnesota, rushing for 43 touchdowns as a finalist for the state's "Mr. Football" award.
With a focus on in-state talent, though, Hauck and his staff made sure to lock up the top Montana recruits to start the recruiting cycle.
"I really like the class that we put together. We still have recruiting to do in January, but this is a good class," said Hauck.
"We're leaning heavily on Montana kids, as we always do here at the University of Montana, but I'm excited about all these guys."
One year after the 2020 season was put on pause due to the pandemic, Hauck says he and the Grizzlies will continue navigating a changed NCAA recruiting world to balance each class on the roster.
"Certainly, it's an odd year with numbers, everyone on the team getting an extra year of eligibility, and the seniors not counting against your number this fall," Hauck added.
"So, there's been a sort of salary cap. Things we've had to juggle. But I like where we're at."
Montana added 19 new players in the class of 2021, 22 players in the class of 2020, 26 players in 2019, and 26 players in Hauck's first recruiting class at UM in 2018.
So far in this year's 12-man class, the Grizzly offense added five players, the defense added four, with a kicker/punter and two general athletes rounding out the early signees.
The early signing period continues through December 17. The regular signing period is scheduled for February 2, 2022.
