Montana releases 2021 outdoor track & field schedule

While Montana's indoor track & field season did not take place this winter, the program's 2021 outdoor season has taken form.

The season will begin later this month, with Montana's annual Al Manuel Northwest Invite, a home meet that will bring teams to Missoula the weekend of March 26-27. Montana will also host the annual Griz-Cat Dual, against rival Montana State, on April 24.

The Grizzlies will twice travel to Bozeman, first for the Bobcat Qualifier (April 10), before returning in May for the Tom Gage Classic (May 5). Montana will also compete at the H.I.R. Invitational, hosted by Whitworth in Spokane, Wash. (April 2), and the Bengal Invitational, at Idaho State (April 16-17).

"In the end, I am very happy with this schedule," head track & field coach Clint May said. "With warmer weather and, hopefully, more and more success in our battle against COVID-19, I'm very much looking forward to the return of track & field. It's been a long time."

May noted that the schedule took several months of collaborating with not only other coaches and universities, but also county health departments to ensure protocols were being met. Once Montana felt as if it could safely compete, the next step was to find high-quality opponents to compete against.

"Montana State always has good talent in just about every event area, and we will see them several times," May said. "It's nice to find good competition right here in your home state. Additionally, the meets that take us outside of Montana will have a high number of participating athletes and offer the type of competition that is realistic to what we will see at the Big Sky Championships."

The 2021 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held May 12-15 in Ogden, Utah, on the campus of Weber State. From there, Montana will hopefully send athletes to the NCAA West Regional (May 27-29 in College Station, Texas).

The 2021 schedule is fluid, with the potential for an additional meet to be added at a later date.
