Male sprinters, female throwers and jumpers pace Grizzlies in Bozeman

BOZEMAN, Montana – Saturday marked Montana's first true dual meet of the season, meaning fewer participants overall and some events in which only one athlete participated, and others in which no Grizzlies took part. Additionally, some of Montana's top performers this season took the weekend to recuperate after back-to-back meets to open the spring.
Still, there was plenty to like from Montana's performance at the Bobcat Qualifier, which included 12 event wins and several personal bests.
Sophomore sprinter Kip Krebsbach was one of the standouts, winning both the 100 meters (10.60) and 200 meters (21.21). Both times were personal bests, and Krebsbach, a Miles City native, now ranks second in the Big Sky this season in the 200 meters and sixth in the 100 meters.
Also winning a sprint race was sophomore Cade Johnstone, who won the 400 meters with a time of 48.38. That time is also a personal best and ranks fifth in the Big Sky this season. Johnstone is a perfect 2-for-2 this season, winning his only other individual race, the 200 meters, last month in Missoula.
Sophomore Jansen Ziola, who had a busy day with four events, also had some of the biggest highlights of the day. In a loaded field, Ziola beat the other 12 competitors in the long jump (19-3.5). She now ranks second in the Big Sky this season in an event that she placed third at during the 2019 Big Sky Championships.
In addition to her long-jump performance, Ziola also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles. Her time of 13.66 is also the second-best of the season in the Big Sky.
Montana once again stood out in the field events, with the Griz women winning the long jump (Ziola), high jump (Abby Dodge), hammer (Tanessa Morris) and discus (Holly Houston).
Houston had a season-best throw of nearly 10 feet, winning the event with a top throw of 157-7. The throw was within four feet of her personal best and currently ranks third in the Big Sky this season.
Morris won the hammer for the third consecutive meet (182-3) – doing so by nearly 25 feet – while Dodge is now 2-for-2 in the high jump, tying a personal best by clearing 5-7. Additionally, freshman Ailsa Gilbert had a busy day with four events, including a second-place finish in the triple jump (39-5.75, fifth in the Big Sky this season). Fellow freshman Aly Tekippe placed second in the pole vault (11-7.75, 10th in Big Sky this season).
Now halfway through its spring season, the Grizzlies will be back in action next weekend at the Bengal Invitational in Pocatello, Idaho.
