Griz set to compete against Cats in Bozeman
4/9/2021 11:33:00 AM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
Montana will be back in action this weekend, looking to continue taking steps forward in what has already been an exciting spring season. The Grizzlies will travel to Bozeman, Montana, for the Bobcat Qualifier on Saturday. The meet will be the first of two in Bozeman this spring; additionally, Montana will host Montana State for the Griz-Cat Dual later this month in Missoula.
Â
Nearly 40 student-athletes have made their outdoor debuts this season for the Griz, and the group has played a major role in Montana's success. Montana currently has 28 athletes ranked in the top 10 in the Big Sky Conference for their respective events, with several of them being newcomers.
Â
An event to keep an eye out for on Saturday will be the women's 100-meter hurdles. Montana's Jansen Ziola ranks fourth in the Big Sky with a top time of 14.44. Between Montana and Montana State, the two schools own four of the top-five times in the Big Sky this season.
Â
It's similar in the men's discus, with Montana State's Ethan Saberhagen leading the Big Sky and Montana's Brent Yeakey ranking third. Yeakey is coming off a meet in which he won both the shot put and discus.
Â
In the women's high jump, Montana's Abby Dodge (fourth in Big Sky) will be going up against the Big Sky leader in Lucy Corbett.
Â
Tanessa Morris ranks second in the Big Sky in the hammer, and will once again be competing in that event, in addition to throwing the discus. Montana has two of the top-three men's javelin throwers, and four of the top-nine, but will not be sending any male throwers on Saturday. Instead, the group of athletes, who all currently rank in the top 50 in the NCAA West Region – led by Dylan Kipp, who is seventh – will get a weekend of rest.
Â
Montana will send a large contingent of athletes to several of its field events, in addition to some of its sprint events. The Grizzlies will have eight runners in the men's 100 meters and six in the 200 meters. In the distance races, the Grizzlies will have six competitors in the men's 1,500 meters and five in the women's 1,5000 meters.
Â
Action on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with the women's javelin. Running events will begin at noon and will continue throughout the afternoon. Live results can be followed online.
