COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Montana senior Brent Yeakey competed on the big stage on Friday afternoon at Texas A&M's E.B. Cushing Stadium, representing Montana in the men's discus at the NCAA West Regional.
In the end, Yeakey placed 33rd out of 48 throwers, with a best throw of 173-3.
Yeakey improved on all three of his attempts, starting with a safe throw of 131-10, before improving to 163-4 and finally 173-3. The Griz thrower was in ninth place at the end of his flight, which consisted of 16 athletes. He finished five spots ahead of where he was seeded entering the meet.
His performance on Friday was consistent with how Yeakey had been throwing recently. The Redmond, Oregon, native threw between 173-1 and 174-6 in each of his three meets in the month of May.
One of those meets was the Big Sky Championships, where Yeakey scored for the eighth time in his career and reached the podium for the first time, with a runner-up finish in the discus. Earlier this spring, Yeakey set a school record with a throw of 180-9 at the OSU High Performance Meet, the third school record he currently holds (also the indoor and outdoor shot put).
Yeakey was competing at NCAA Regionals for the second time in his career, after qualifying in the shot put in 2019 (38th). The senior took part in Montana's Senior Day ceremony last month, but announced this week that he is hopeful to be able to return next spring for one final outdoor season, after he student teaches in Oregon during the fall semester.
Yeakey was one of seven Grizzlies to advance to NCAA Regionals – the top 48 athletes in the western half of the United States in each event – marking Montana's largest contingent since 2017.
On Wednesday, Montana had four athletes compete. Freshman Evan Todd placed 26th in the men's javelin (201-11), followed by senior teammate Dylan Kipp (184-3, 40th). On the running side, senior Jacob Lamb placed 30th in the men's 800 meters (1:50.60). Sophomore Cade Johnstone qualified for men's 400 meters but was unable to finish after pulling a hamstring coming around the first turn. Earlier this month, Johnstone set a school record and won a Big Sky title in the event.
On Thursday, junior Tanessa Morris – who won a Big Sky championship in the women's hammer throw and ranks No. 2 in school history in the event – placed 39th with a throw of 183-6. Senior Kimberly Earhart qualified in the women's javelin, placing 46th with a top throw of 131-5.
