Eight members of the Montana men's tennis team and five from the Grizzly women's team were recognized as Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for their success in the classroom, the organization announced Monday.
Â
Both programs were also once again named an ITA All-Academic Teams for their combined success following another stellar academic year for the Montana netters.Â
Â
The prestigious ITA Scholar-Athlete award recognizes athletes who have gone above and beyond the requirements for an academic all-conference honor with a 3.5 GPA required to earn a place on the list.
Â
To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale), and all student-athletes included must be eligible to compete. All varsity letter winners are factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.
Â
Men's coach Jason Brown's squad, a two-time winner of the Dusten Hollist Award for the highest GPA in Grizzly Athletics, posted a combined 3.8 GPA in the 2020-21 academic year.
Â
Coach Steve Ascher's women's team was equally impressive, maintaining a 3.6 team GPA over the last school year.
Â
In 2021, 1054 Division I Men student-athletes were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, and 145 men's tennis programs were awarded the All-Academic Team distinction. Compared to the previous year, 75 more Division I men received the distinction of ITA Scholar-Athlete.
