UM launches ‘Paint Missoula Maroon’ event, invites public

The University of Montana is inviting the public, commercial businesses, residential neighborhoods and the larger community to show its UM pride as the University welcomes a new academic year and students fill Missoula once again.
For this new project, UM students and staff will distribute free Griz Kits to area businesses and neighborhoods on Tuesday, Aug. 17, to "Paint Missoula Maroon." The kits will include UM stickers, yard signs, flags, window decals for display on cars, in windows and on sidewalks to show community pride and investment in UM.
The initiative was launched in response due to the trying times presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and to renew a sense of community and University pride as UM prepares welcome a new class of students and kickoff the academic year
The media is invited to learn more about "Paint Missoula Maroon" at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 333 East Beckwith in Missoula. UM President Seth Bodnar will discuss the importance of the timing and encourage community members to participate, and neighborhood residents will be welcome to comment on the project.
"Community pride is University pride," said Greg Sundberg, senior associate athletic director and executive director of the Grizzly Scholarship Association. Sundberg spearheaded the "Paint Missoula Maroon" project to drive visible momentum for UM, its students and its impact on Missoula's economic vitality.
"We are all emerging from a difficult year and a half together," Sundberg said. "The goal of this project is to visibly celebrate the vibrant connection between Missoula and UM, to welcome new and returning students, and to renew the heart of the Grizzly spirit in our community. We look forward to spreading maroon throughout Missoula."
