Montana opened its 2021 season over the weekend at the CofC Invitational, taking on Kennesaw State, Eastern Michigan and host College of Charleston.
Match Point vs. Kennesaw State
Montana earned its first win of the season with a 3-2 win over Kennesaw State, a perennial contender in the ASUN Conference. The Grizzlies trailed 2-1 before making a comeback, that included 15 kills from sophomore Ellie Scherffius, who was making her first collegiate start.
Scherffius Highlights
Sophomore Ellie Scherffius was named to the CofC Invitational all-tournament team after a terrific weekend in Charleston. Seeing her first significant action as a college volleyball player (she recorded four kills and three blocks during the spring season), Scherffius shined over the weekend, averaging a team-best 2.43 kills per set on .540 hitting (34-7-50). She also added 14 blocks (1.00 per set) while earning the first three starts of her career. In the season opener, a five-set win over Kennesaw State, Scherffius recorded 15 kills on .650 hitting (15-2-20), leading the Griz in both kills and blocks (6). Later that day, she was nearly perfect, recording nine kills at an .818 clip with zero errors (9-0-11), again adding six blocks. She was in double figures once again on Sunday, totaling 10 kills vs. host College of Charleston.
