12/19/2022 5:42:00 PM | Football
The Montana Grizzlies landed six players on one of four Stats Perform FCS All-American teams on Tuesday, tied for the most honorees in the Big Sky Conference.
Â
Three Grizzlies were named to defensive team lists, three were named to special teams lists, and one player was named to two different lists by the FCS media outlet.
Â
After breaking the Big Sky record for most career tackles, Robby Hauck was named to the first-team defense. Linebacker Patrick O'Connell and cornerback Justin Ford were each named to the defensive second team, while Malik Flowers earned a place on the second team as a kick returner and Junior Bergen was named to the second team as a punt returner.
Â
FCS Punter of the Year Patrick Rohrbach doubled up on All-America honors, named to the Stats Perform second team and to its Freshman All-America team as well.
Â
Hauck became the Big Sky's all-time leading tackler in 2022, finishing his career with 482 stops in 53 games, having started every contest over the last five years at UM.
Â
With 118 stops this year, he posted 115-plus tackles in three different seasons, including a career-high 129 in 2019. His career total of 482 beats EWU's Ronnie Hamlin's previous Big Sky record of 473 and places him among the top six tacklers of all time in the FCS ranks.
Â
Hauck is now a two-time All-American in 2022 after earning first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press last week.
Â
O'Connell picked up his first All-America nod from STATS this season after leading the Big Sky in both sacks and tackles for loss for a second-straight season, despite missing the bulk of three games with injury. He finished his career at UM ranked sixth all-time among career leaders in both categories with 28.5 sacks and 45 TFLs.
Â
The Kalispell native now turns his attention to the Hula Bowl all-star game where he will compete in front of professional scouts.
Â
Ford, another NFL prospect, picks up his third All-America accolade with a place on the Stats second team. He also earned All-America status from the AP and HERO Sports this season after being paid the ultimate respect by opposing teams this year.
Â
UM's opponents completed 229 passes for 2,391 yards against the Griz all season. Just 12 of those passes were caught by Ford's man for a total of 163 yards. He finished the year with four shut-outs of the man he was defending, where they logged zero catches in a game.
Â
Despite not much opportunity, Ford amassed 34 total tackles, including two for loss this season. He finished fourth on the team in pass breakups with five, and was one of four players to lead the team with two interceptions and recovered a fumble as well.
Â
Rohrbach earns his third and fourth All-America honors of the year from Stats, landing on the second team for special teams as well as the freshman team at punter.
Â
The true freshman from Kalispell was named the FCS Punter of the Year after leading the Big Sky with an average of 45.2 yards per attempt, the second-best average in UM program history.
Â
Flowers is another record holder that finished his career tied for the most kickoff return touchdowns in NCAA history with seven. He finishes his career with 2,659 kick return yards on 92 attempts for an average of 28.9 per return, the best average in Montana history and a top-six all-time Big Sky average.
Â
Bergen was named second-team All-American at punt returner after leading the Big Sky and finishing fourth in the FCS this season. The native of Billings returned 22 punts for 327 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 14.9 yards per return, despite missing games to injury. He was also named a sophomore All-American by HERO Sports earlier this offseason.
