BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana track & field team opened the 2022 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday with four females competing in the pentathlon.
The Grizzlies got points from two athletes, becoming one of two schools to have multiple point scorers on the day. Senior Jaree Mane scored 3,560 points – good for sixth place – while junior Morgan Radtke was shortly behind at 3,448 points (seventh).
All three of Montana's finishers recorded personal-best scores, with Missoula native Whitney Morrison also placing 11th out of 17 competitors in her first indoor championship meet (3,329 points).
Mane, a senior from Lewistown, Montana, who was competing in her fourth indoor championship, scored for the second year in a row after also finishing sixth in 2020. She started the day strong with a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles – a PR by 14-hundredths of a second – before recording another PR in the shot put (40-0.5, second in the field).
Radtke, a junior from Drummond, Montana, scored for the fifth time in her career – in five different events across indoor and outdoor. She started slow in the 60-meter hurdles, but hit her stride in the second event, placing second in the high jump – an event she scored in during last spring's outdoor championship. Radtke' 5-6.5 in the high jump tied a career best and earned 842 points before she again PR'd in the shot put (32-7.75) and 800 meters (2:27.21).
Morrison got a taste of the conference meet last spring when she finished seventh in the heptathlon at the outdoor championship. While she didn't score again on Thursday, she did have a strong showing, recording personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles (9.30), long jump (16-8.5) and 800 meters (2:27.15). She finished in the upper-half of the field in four of five events.
While Montana and Idaho State were the only two schools to have multiple point-scorers in the pentathlon, the difference was where the Grizzlies and Bengals stacked up. Montana scored five points while the Bengals hauled in 19, finishing first, second and eighth.
As good as Montana did on the opening day of the meet – with three personal bests – it also left points on the board.
Junior Jansen Ziola won the pentathlon as a freshman in 2018 and finished second in 2019. Her career-best mark of 3,925 points would have smashed the best score from Thursday. However, Ziola was unable to finish the meet, pulling out after three events.
Ziola started strong with a time of 8.57 in the 60-meter hurdles, tied for the best time in the field and on par with her career-best time. She placed ninth in the high jump and 13th in the shot put but was unable to finish the long jump – arguably her strongest event – or the 800 meters. Had she been able to healthily finish, she likely would have been in line for a podium finish.
The heart of the Big Sky Championships will begin Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. and will continue through Saturday. Fans can follow along via an ESPN+ live stream and through live results.
