MISSOULA, Mont. - After another undefeated weekend, the Montana men's tennis team moved up to No. 62 in the D-I national rankings, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced Wednesday.
Â
The Griz (9-0, 1-0 BSC) went three-for-three on their road trip to Oregon last week, beating George Fox, Pacific, and opening Big Sky Conference play with a 7-0 win over Portland State.
Â
With a 6-0 record in singles and doubles over the three-match span, UM senior Ed Pudney was named the Big Sky Men's Tennis Player of the Week for a second time this season. Montana has now played in four weeks of competition and has landed four player of the week awards from the league.
Â
On Feb. 23, Montana earned its first-ever national ranking from the ITA at No. 63, having tallied upset wins over Air Force and Boise State so far this season.
Â
This week, the Griz remain as one of only two undefeated teams in the ITA top-75, along with the Utah Utes (14-0). UM is currently ranked ahead of P-5 programs such as Wisconsin (No. 63), Washington (No. 67), Arizona State (No. 71), and Penn State (No. 73).
Â
Montana is also the highest of three Big Sky Conference teams to earn a national ranking this week, with Montana State (10-3) in at No. 64 and Northern Arizona (10-4) at No 65.
Â
The Grizzlies return to action on March 18, traveling to Spokane to take on the nationally-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs, who slotted in one spot ahead of UM at No. 61 in this week's rankings.
Â
If the Griz and Zags remain in the March 8 and 15 rankings, it will be the first ranked-versus-ranked match in UM program history.
