Grizzly Athletics celebrated the accomplishments of those who have dedicated themselves to success in the classroom on Tuesday evening at the annual Grizzly Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet in the UC Ballroom.
Â
It has been another record-setting year for University of Montana student-athletes with more than 70 percent (249 of 347) obtaining a 3.0 grade-point average or better during the fall semester.
Â
During the Spring 2021 term, Montana's student-athletes achieved a program-best 3.41 GPA. This past fall, its student-athletes earned the second-highest GPA ever, at 3.40. Montana's student-athletes have now gone 16 consecutive semesters with a term GPA above 3.0, and 33 straight semesters with a cumulative GPA above 3.0.
Â
With student-athletes on the University's most-recent Dean's List and 36 with a perfect 4.0, every athletic team on campus had at least a 3.0 term GPA this past fall, with each team also owning at least a 3.17 cumulative GPA through the end of the calendar year.
Â
Montana celebrated all of that and more on Tuesday.
Â
Thanks to the generosity of dozens of donors, 47 different scholarships were divided between 57 deserving recipients. Additionally on Tuesday, four individuals and one team were presented major academic awards for being the best of the best amongst UM's student-athlete body.
Â
In addition to the Grizzly Cup award winners – Montana's top male and female athlete of the year – the Grizzlies also awarded the President's Award, for best overall GPA in the department, and the Dusten Hollist Award, for the team with the highest GPA.
Â
The Dusten Hollist Award was renamed in 2019 after Hollist, the former faculty athletic representative, who passed away in 2019. The first team to earn the award after it was renamed in Hollist's honor was men's tennis – and although it was never announced in 2020 or 2021 due to COVID-19 canceling both banquets, men's tennis won both of those years, as well – so it's only fitting that that group again took home honors as the top team in the classroom four the fourth consecutive year.
Â
Jason Brown's men's tennis team earned a 3.65 term GPA in the fall and holds a program-best 3.68 cumulative GPA. Among its 10 student-athletes, nine have a 3.0 GPA or higher with three obtaining a 4.0.
Â
The four individuals recognized as President's Award winners include Pontus Hallgren of men's tennis; Jethro Thorne of men's track & field; Jaree Mane of women's track & field; and Beatrix Frissell of women's track & field/cross country.
Â
Hallgren and Thorne received the award on the men's side for the second year in a row.
Â
Hallgren, a senior from Stockholm, Sweden, owns 120 victories throughout his tennis career. He has earned Academic All-Big Sky status each season, in addition to Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete honors. He is a senior majoring in economics.
Â
Thorne has twice competed in the long jump at the Big Sky Championships and is a four-time Academic All-Big Sky selection. He is a senior majoring in music.
Â
Mane has earned Academic All-Big Sky honors all nine semesters of her career and has scored six times across four different events, including a podium finish in the distance medley relay. She is a graduate student majoring in public health.
Â
Frissell, who recently earned the prestigious Truman Award, has earned eight Academic All-Big Sky honors across cross country, indoor and outdoor track. She scored in the indoor 5,000 meters in 2020 and was an All-Big Sky cross country runner in 2019, advancing to NCAA Regionals. She is a senior majoring in political science.
