Yeakey among Griz standouts from Bengal Invitational

POCATELLO, Idaho – Completing against several Big Sky Conference teams at the venue of next month's Big Sky Championships, Montana earned 13 personal bests over the weekend at the Bengal Invitational.
While many Grizzlies were hoping for more just two weeks before the conference meet, there were a handful of highlights, particularly on the men's side.
Senior thrower Brent Yeakey finished second in the shot put (season-best 55-6.25), but even bigger was his discus performance. Yeakey won the event (178-1) and was within 3 feet of his own school record. His mark ranks second in the Big Sky this season and 44th in the NCAA West Region.
Sprinter Paul Johnstone had a busy meet, qualifying for the finals of the 200 meters and 400 meters and running on Montana's 4x400-meter relay team. In the 400 meters – an event his twin brother set a school record in last spring – Johnstone placed third with a time of 48.00. Johnstone has now improved his 400 meters time in each of his four spring meets, with Saturday not only being a PR but the sixth-best time in the Big Sky this season.
On the women's side, Tanessa Morris hit a season-best mark in the hammer (201-4), within 9 inches of a lifetime best, as Montana had three of the top-eight throwers in the event. Morris' mark ranks 25th in the NCAA West Region this season and first in the Big Sky. Morgan Radtke placed second in the high jump (5-7.25), tying a PR and ranking third in the Big Sky this season, while also PRing in the javelin.
Additionally, Emma Normand qualified for the finals in both the 100 meters (11.94, fourth) and 200 meters (24.86, fifth), with both times being lifetime bests.

Additional highlights from the weekend include:
- Holly Sudol (1:01.16, third) and Abby Harmon (1:03.69, seventh) both qualified for the finals of the women's 400-meter hurdles. Both times were lifetime bests and nearly 2-second improvements from Friday's preliminary race. The duo, along with Jansen Ziola, all rank in the top 10 in the Big Sky this season.
- Cooper Hewett ran a lifetime-best time in the men's 100 meters (10.82, fourth out of 37), but was unable to compete in Saturday's finals, despite also qualifying in the men's 200 meters (21.67, fourth).
- While Hewett did not compete in the men's 100-meters finals, teammate Kip Krebsbach did, and thrived, coming within five-hundredths of a second of a PR (10.69) and running the best time by a Grizzly this season.
- Matt Ward picked up his third win in six meets this season in the hammer (203-7). Also in the top 10 was Noah Ramirez (170-4, fourth) and Colton Root (155-5, 10th). Root also PR'd in the discus (131-7).
- Montana had two of the top-five throwers in the javelin, with Evan Todd (215-7) and Matthew Hockett (198-0) placing third and fifth, respectively.
- Beatrix Frissell won the women's 10,000 meters with a time of 38:18.04.
- Bridget Boyle ran a 2-second PR in the women's 1,500 meters (4:43.36), finishing fifth out of 36 runners.
- Ziola competed in three events on the weekend, finishing third in the 100-meter hurdles (13.98) and seventh in the long jump (18-5.75). With Ailsa Gilbert placing eighth in the long jump (18-5), Montana had two of the top-eight jumpers.
- In addition to Morris breaking 200 feet in the women's hammer, Montana had three of the top-eight throwers, out of a field of 40, with Kaitlyn Gallo placing fifth (169-1) and Ariel Clark finishing eighth (164-3).
- Competing for the first time since the season-opening meet in March, Jaydon Green – who set a school record in the hurdles during the indoor season – placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (14.65).
- All four of Montana's pole vaulters (two on the men's side and two on the women's) tied for ninth, with Molly Chambers (11-4.25) and Carson Weeden (15-5) tying PRs.
