May resigns from track & field, cross country positions

Clint May has resigned from his positions as head coach for Montana's track & field and cross country programs. He submitted his resignation last week in order to pursue opportunities outside of collegiate coaching.

May spent three seasons as Montana's head cross country coach and two leading the track & field programs.

"We are very thankful and very lucky to have had Clint lead our track and field programs over the past several years," said Ryan Martin, Montana's chief financial officer and sport supervisor for track. "You will not find someone who cares more about student-athletes and their well-being than Clint May. We will certainly miss Clint, but we are happy for him and excited to see what new adventures come his way."

May helped navigate the Grizzlies through the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw an indoor track season completely canceled and the 2020 cross country campaign limited to just two races. In between, however, Montana saw some successes under May's guidance, including two All-Big Sky performers in cross country in 2019.

In four track & field seasons (2020 indoor as an assistant, and 2021 outdoor, 2022 indoor and 2022 outdoor as head coach) May saw six Grizzlies earn individual Big Sky Conference titles, including distance runners June Eastwood and Jacob Lamb. A total of 13 Griz athletes have qualified for NCAA Regionals over the past two seasons, including seven in 2021, Montana's largest representation in four seasons.

Away from competition, Montana has taken care of business in the classroom. In 2020-21, May's first year directing both cross country and track & field, all four of his programs (men's cross country, women's cross country, men's track & field and women's track & field) recorded at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average. His athletes have totaled 168 Academic All-Big Sky honors over the past two season, with more to come once the Winter and Spring lists are announced. In 2021, the Grizzlies again earned the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, with six individuals honored. Montana is expected to again be recognized in 2022.
